Part I

Cool the reaction mixture in an ice-water bath. Filter and wash your product with saturated NaCl solution.

The video starts with a still close up on a small Erlenmeyer flask filled with bright red-orange sludge sitting inside of a large beaker filled with ice water. The next shot shows a Hirsch funnel fitted into a filter flask via a rubber adapter. The arm of the filter flask is fitted into a thick plastic tube that extends off screen. The viscous, red-orange contents of the Erlenmeyer flask are poured into the Hirsch funnel. After some waiting, translucent orange solution begins to drip slowly out of the funnel into the flask below. Next we see a still close up on a translucent plastic reagent bottle labeled “Saturated NaCl.” A gloved hand holds a graduated test tube in front of the reagent bottle, which is filled just past the 1.0 mL marking with clear liquid. The caption on the photo reads “Use saturated NaCl to rinse flask…” When the video returns, we see a gloved hand swirling the rinse inside the Erlenmeyer flask before adding it to the contents of the Hirsch funnel. Next there is a still close up on a watch glass with numerous smearings of dark orange clay-like substance. The caption reads “After draining and drying…”

Allow the solids to air-dry, then record the mass of of your product.
