Part I

Cool to room temperature, then in an ice-water bath. Filter and wash your product with saturated NaCl solution.
Allow the solids to air-dry, then record the mass of of your product.

The video shows an Erlenmeyer flask clamped in place in a sand bath. The flask contains a boiling stick and a moderate portion of bright red slurry, much of which is plastered to the sides of the flask. Gloved hands free the flask from its clamp and place it on the lab bench. Looking inside the flask from above, we can see that its clay-like contents are clumped near the center of the flask. The screen then goes black except for the caption “Wait to cool…” When the video returns, we see a gloved hand lift the Erlenmeyer flask off the lab bench and place it in the plastic tub filled with ice. The “Wait to cool…” black screen appears again, followed by a video showing a gloved hand removing the flask from the tub of ice. The hand points to a Hirsch funnel, which is seated in a filter flask via rubber adapter and clamped in place. The arm of the filter flask has been inserted into a thick plastic tube, which disappears into the background. The boiling stick is used to scrape the contents of the Erlenmeyer flask into the Hirsch funnel. A plastic syringe is used to remove a 0.5 mL portion of clear liquid from a one dram vial and dribble it over the red solids in the Hirsch funnel. The next frame shows the boiling stick stirring the contents of the Hirsch funnel, which have liquified considerably. The bottom of the filter flask now contains a moderate portion of dark red, translucent solution. Occasional drops of solution fall from the funnel into the bottom of the flask. The screen goes black again, this time with the caption “Leave to dry…” When the video returns, we see much less liquid in the funnel; its contents are now more like a thin red-orange paste. The final shot shows the screen of a laboratory scale reading “1.135 g.” This shot pans to show the platform of the scale, where a moderate sized pile of wet, clay-like, reddish-orange solids sit on a piece of weighing paper.
