Part I

Dissolve the 3-amino starting material in the sodium bicarbonate solution.

Be sure to note the volume of sodium bicarbonate used in your laboratory notebook.

The video shows a round bottom flask held in place above a magnetic stir plate by a rubber adapter. Gloved hands hold a piece of weighing paper, folded in half along the diagonal and containing a small pile of off-white solids, which is poured into the flask. A plastic syringe is removed from its wrapper and used to deliver a 1 mL portion of clear liquid from a one-dram vial into the round bottom flask. A second 1 mL portion of the clear liquid is added, followed by a 0.5 mL portion. The mixture in the flask is now a cloudy, pale orange solution. The magnetic stir plate is turned on, and we see erratic movement of the stir bar inside the flask, indicating mixing.

What should you do next?

Heat in a warm water bath.

Add the NaNO2.
