This site includes a toolkit of resources intended for use by UC Berkeley departments and organizations to further the communication efforts to get all students to participate in the 2020 Census. #CalCounts

What is the 2020 Census?

The Census happens every 10 years and beginning on March 12, 2020, everyone will be asked to complete the U.S. Census online, by phone, by mail, or in person. An accurate population count brings federal funding to our schools, roads, and housing.

Why does this matter?

The census gives us data about where we live informs the distribution of billions of dollars in federal funding, including money for Pell Grants; and determines the number of decision-makers representing us. An undercount means fewer resources for the entire Berkeley campus - for every person not counted, our community loses $10,000. We need your assistance in communicating to students the importance of their participation, and that their answers are confidential and protected by law.

What can you do?

Promote the Census! Visit the Toolkit page for marketing resources to plug into your email, social media, digital displays, download and print signs, etc.

How does it work?

Depending on where a student lives will determine how those individuals complete the census. Those Living in On-Campus or Other Type Group Housing known as “Group Quarters” will have specific instructions given to them by their housing staff. Those living off campus can complete the 2020 Census by phone, online or in person starting March 12. Visit calcounts.berkeley.edu to stay up to date.

When is it?

The campaign will be focused, March 12 - May 1, 2020 (prior to summer break).
