You are now ready to characterize your product using melting point analysis.

Begin by observing the melting point rage of the pure benzoin starting material. This will be an important point of comparison for the other melting point ranges you measure.

This video has two frames: on the left, a close up view of the interior of the melting point apparatus in which a thin, clear glass capillary tube has been packed with a small amount of white crystalline solid and inserted into a metal frame; on the right, a screen displays the temperature of the metal frame in degrees Celsius as the apparatus is heated. The some point during heating, the white solids begin to “sweat” droplets of clear liquid until the entirety of the solid has melted into a clear puddle at the bottom of the capillary tube. Please seek assistance in determine the temperatures at which these changes occur.

In addition to measuring (a) the melting point of your purified product, you will also mix a small amount of your product with (b) the benzoin starting material, and (c) one of your teammate's products. Check with your GSI if you are uncertain about the meaning of these "mixed" melting point measurements.
