Bienvenido a nuestro sitio web multilingüe (inglés, español y maya yucateco) que está dedicado a representar la experiencia del inmigrante multilingüe y preservar el idioma indígena, maya, o maaya t'aan (t'aan significa idioma o lengua). Nuestro objetivo es abogar por los derechos educativos de los niñes inmigrantes mediante el desarrollo de un plan de estudios que honre la historia indígena y refleje las experiencias colectivas de los inmigrantes en los Estados Unidos. Esta unidad de cuatro días fue creada para el área de San Francisco, California, que tiene una población significativa inmigrante maya de Yucatán, México. Welcome to our multilingual website (English, Spanish, and Yucatec Maya), which is dedicated to representing the immigrant experience and preserving multiingualismm, and in particular, the Indigenous Maya language. Our aim is to advocate for immigrant children's educational rights by developing a free educational unit that honors Indigenous history and reflects collective immigrant experiences in the United States. This four-day unit was created for areas in San Francisco, California, with a significant Yucatec Maya immigrant population. The unit is flexible and can be extended into more days. We hope this model inspires other teachers and families to create educational units representing the history and experiences of Indigenous and immigrant communities.
El nombre de la unidad fue inspirado por el arte y mensaje en uno de los salones del Centro Estatal de Capacitación, Investigación y Difusión Humanística en Izamal, Yucatán, dirigido por Fidencio Briceño Chel.
This website is intended to serve as a guide for K-3 teachers in San Francisco, home to a predominantly Yucatec Maya immigrant population, to assist them in their instruction of Chicanx and Indigenous history
We hope that this four-day unit can inspire other teachers to develop their own history units to include the past and present of their multicultural and Indigenous students
NOTE ON LANGUAGE USED:
In this website, we use use the present tense when discussing Indigenous history. This is to emphasize that Indigenous history is still being written and that it is not a story of the past.
In this website, we use expanded features of Spanish that promote inclusive language. You will find references to Latine, Chicane, and Latinx to indicate gender inclusivity and diversity. We are excited and proud to represent the great variety and experiences of LGBTQ+ families and communities.

¡ In k’aaba'e' Patricia! I am a professor at the Berkeley School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley. I study the ways we can preserve and revalorize Indigenous languages in our public schools. A goal in my work is to make research findings on bi/multilingualisms accessible to teachers, students, and researchers. UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT: ¡In k'aaba'e' Emma! I am a first-generation college student who is studying history and Spanish at the University of California, Berkeley. I hope to use my degree to promote multilingual education and decenter Eurocentric thought in the classroom.
