Policy Purpose: A fundamental principle of IT Recovery at UC Berkeley is to guide Units to have appropriate resources in place to recover Institutional Information and IT Resources in the event of an unavoidable or unforeseen disaster, whether natural or human-made.
The new IS-12 Policy introduces the way IT Recovery is handled within the university. Foundational elements include:
Units are responsible for implementing, documenting, and managing their IT Recovery.
Document your IT Disaster Recovery plans in the UC Ready tool.
Many requirements are based on Recovery Level.
UC Berkeley’s Recovery Levels have been updated to align with the new UC systemwide scale of R1-R5.
IT Recovery Readiness testing based on Recovery level.
A backup copy of your data to be stored off-site for RL3 and above.
Annual testing on your IT Recovery for RL4 and above.
Exception process if Unit is not in compliance with the Policy.
Governance model and explicitly called out roles (not a reporting structure).
Unit head is accountable for the IT Recovery of their service.
Unit IT Recovery Lead (UITRL) is not a new role but is called out explicitly to distinguish and assign certain duties to this role.
Unit IT Recovery Team is not a new role.
