Lost in your own map?
Where am I?
In Layers Panel, choose a Layer and Right Click -> Zoom to Layer
This allows you to jump to the extent of a particular layer to reorient yourself.
TIP: Set a Spatial Bookmark! Under View, choose Show Bookmarks. In the panel that opens, click on New Bookmark to set the current map extent as a Bookmark. You can add several bookmarks of different scales, extents etc for fast returns to a map view.
Problem: All I see is white space. Check the scale bar to see if you are zoomed waaaaay in: 1:1 or waaaaaay out. Scale: 1:-2,147,483,648. You can zoom in or out further than this, but the scale will max out.
Problem: My layers don’t fit together or show up in the wrong place
In the Layers Panel, Right Click > Properties – this will pop up a window with options
Choose ‘General’ on the left hand menu
Coordinate Reference System - check to see if all of your layers have the same projection.
To check the Coordinate Reference System of your project (Map View), then click on the CRS shortcut on the bottom of your Map View.
You can reset the projection of the Map View here. QGIS will automatically set it to the projection of the first layer you add or to Web Mercator if you add a base map from a web service (default projection of Google Maps for example)
Make sure the option Enable 'on the fly' CRS transformation is checked ON.
Problem: My layer is solid and I can’t see anything underneath it
In the Layers Panel, Right Click > Properties
Choose ‘Style’ on the left hand menu
Click on Simple Fill, under Colors, choose Transparent. This will give you a boundary outline.
