The FLOSS program will include 8 workshops. Workshop topics are subject to change and will ultimately be driven by the needs and interests of FLOSS participants.
In this introductory workshop, we want to hear from YOU. What are you hoping to gain from this workshop series? We will also be exploring the demographics of our students and understanding our students' needs.
Everyone has a set of unconscious beliefs about different social groups, formed through our background and past experiences. In this workshop, we will consider our own positionality and unconscious biases, and how unconscious bias, stereotype threat, and growth or deficit mindset can affect our students' experiences in the classroom.
In this workshop, we will focus on the critical importance of language, both formal and informal, on fostering community and including every student in the learning process. We will discuss concrete steps you can take towards building a more inclusive classroom. Topics include microaggressions vs. microaffirmations, positive vs. negative "instructor talk", and asset vs. deficit thinking.
Learning is not a one-way street. In this workshop, we will discuss how to help students become more aware of their own learning process, and how that self-awareness can improve student success.
In this workshop, we will discuss the science supporting active learning and practice techniques for incorporating active learning into a variety of course settings. We will also discuss concerns and challenges in the transition towards active learning approaches.
In Adaptive Learning, the progress of each student through an exercise is affected by their performance on each part. Thus, the exercise adapts to the needs of an individual student. In this workshop, we will learn about and practice with Courselets, a free, online, open-source platform for adaptive learning.
In this workshop, we will consider overall course design – how course structure and the integration of assessments and learning goals can improve student motivation and outcomes.
In this capstone workshop, participants will combine skills and strategies learned throughout the FLOSS program to transform, create, and pilot new lesson plans with peer feedback and discussion.
