Our life journeys are full of experiences that define who we are and how we perceive ourselves and the world around us. In our lives, there have been subtle and monumental moments that have shifted how we think, perceive, live, work, and dream. During this session, participants will be reminded of the greatness that is their life journey and how it has shaped who they are today. This reflective exercise will help folks remember their power and truth while helping us all reset to more deeply align with our unique strengths and gifts.ย ย
Equity-oriented pedagogy cannot be accomplished in isolation or in a vacuum. This teaching practice relies on community, an awareness of our history, and institutional support to center inclusion and access at the heart of teaching. As educational developers on an inclusive teaching team, we support instructors to overcome barriers to implementing equitable teaching, including low self-efficacy, departmental pushback, and misconceptions about the role of humanity in the classroom. In this session, participants will use case studies to examine factors that enhance or hinder equitable teaching and name efforts across our collective work that sustain instructors and studentsโ commitment to equity.

Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) are colleges and universities that enroll 25% Latine/x students. There are over 600 in the country, with California being home to the most, yet most HSIs struggle with what it means to actually โserveโ Latine/x students. In this session Dr. Gina Garcia provides an overview of the concept of โservingness,โ an organizational approach to doing more than enrolling Latine/x studentsโitโs about creating conditions that produce equitable academic and liberatory outcomes for Latine students, and all minoritized students; itโs about empowering Latine and minoritized students by transforming educational structures and creating culturally-enhancing environments that enable students to thrive; itโs about assessing campus culture and educational experiences in dynamic ways.ย

Psychological safety and trust are crucial for individual and departmental well-being. Psychological safety is about feeling safe to take risks, express ideas and make mistakes without fear of negative consequences in an environment where individuals can learn and grow andย are respected and valued. Trust is the belief that you can rely on others and that your best interests will be taken care of. The two are intertwined and when they are missing, it can create a culture of fear and silence where individual well-being and departmental responsibility are sacrificed. Join us to take time to reflect, understand and share ideas about creating psychological safety and trust in your department and teams.
We aim to explore two key questions: How do you protect yourself digitally as someone working in equity, and why is equity work necessary in the first place? In this session, Dr. Figueroa will present an overview of cutting edge research on managing diversity and inclusion.
