At this hybrid half-day workshop on Sat, Jun 10, 2023 at ISLS 2023 (2023.isls.org), we will take stock of the emerging field of K-12 Data Science Education with an international perspective through an initial series of brief reports including the outcomes of a recent U. S. National Academies workshop; emerging findings from the International Collaboration for Research on Statistical Reasoning, Thinking, and Literacy (SRTL); results from a citation network analysis of related publications, and more.
We will use these reports as a springboard to collectively consider:
What can the Learning Sciences as a field uniquely contribute to the growing discourse around Data Science Education?
How does this emerging field challenge and grow our understanding of learning in society amidst a fast-changing world?
Tentative Schedule & Outcomes
Hour 1. Welcome & Opening
Norm setting around backgrounds, needs, goals of participants.
Brief "State of the Field" Presentations
Hour 2. Identification of Driving Questions, Workgroup formation. Example questions:
What might learning about data science across schooling, day-to-day life, media, and various tools and subject areas look like? How can these ecologies of learning be productively studied?
How do we learn from the successes and the mistakes of other emerging school subjects (e.g. computing)?
How can we begin to look beyond specific tools or curriculum designs toward more general principles through which we can understand the technological and knowledge infrastructures that underpin data science?
Hour 3. Workgroups to map known literature and set next-steps agenda.
Brief community building activity [15 mins] before breaking into workgroups.
For each workgroup topic, participants identify:
Key knowns and unknowns from the literature
Key open questions and needs
The potential contributions of Learning Sciences as a field (including key literatures, theories, frameworks, etc.) to addressing those questions and needs
Last 30m. Workgroups Report Out; plan next steps.
By July 15. Identify venue for sharing outcomes of workshop.
By Dec 15. First draft of communications sharing outcomes from workgroups for publication.
