(Data is Beautiful, Most Popular Music Styles 1910 - 2019, Oct 21, 2019)
This video provides a timeline history of the most popular genres over the period 1910-2019. Over the course of the video, there’s a continuously moving visualization that has each genre move up and down based on its popularity during the year shown. There are a variety of subgenres in the video to present the most accurate information. The numbers on the right side of each genre bar are relative to the other genres around it. This number compares the popularity and reflects each increase or decrease throughout the time period. In the 1910s we see the popularity of Opera, then a change to Country and Jazz in the 1920s-40s, Rock and Soul in the 50s-60s, Disco, Techno-Pop, and House dominate the 70s-2000s, and from the 2000s to the 2010s there’s a shift of House to Hip-Hop/Rap. The dataset we are working with relates to this timeline as our visualizations display a similar overall evolution of music in terms of genres and sound with both timelines.
