Purification

Cool the reaction flask to room temperature and filter the mixture using the glass-fiber Pasteur pipette method.

video shows a glass pipette being used to withdraw two portions of black solution out of small round bottom flask; the black solution is pipetted into the opening of another pipette resting upright in a beaker; the first pipette is set aside and its rubber bulb transferred onto the second pipette; the video perspective shifts to reveal that the second pipette has a small wad of white glass fiber filter paper inserted where the pipette becomes narrow; the bulb is used to force the solution drop by drop through the filter paper into a small Erlenmeyer flask below; the solution leaving the pipette is clear, while the solution above the filter paper remains black; after most of the liquid has exited the pipette and only a small amount of black residue remains above the filter paper, the first pipette is used to add more black solution from the round bottom flask to the filtration pipette; a syringe full of clear liquid is used to rinse the inside of the round bottom flask and the rinse is added to the filtration pipette as well; this second portion is also forced through the filter paper using the rubber pipette bulb, leaving a small amount of clear solution in the Erlenmeyer flask

Place the filtrate in an ice-water bath.
