Before the lab period complete the following background reading.

Acids and Bases: In addition to the discussion of acids and bases in section 4.1, you may wish to review this topic in your introductory chemistry text. Remember that carboxylic acids are organic acids. They can act as proton donors. Amines are organic bases and can act as proton acceptors.

Properties of Organic Molecules: In order to understand solubility, it is necessary to understand the intermolecular forces between identical and dissimilar molecules discussed in chapter 5.

Solubility: Solubility and Invert vs. Reactive Solvents are discussed in Sections 6.1 and 6.1.1

Prelab Checklist:

Enter the names, structures, molecular formulas, and molecular weights of all reactants and reagents in tabular form in your laboratory notebook before the laboratory period. Include the liquid densities and boiling points of all liquids and the melting points of all solids. See Chapter 3 for references that have detailed information about chemical compounds. For each of the parts of the experiment, predict in the prelab write-up if the process involves a change in only the intermolecular forces or a chemical reaction. When chemical reactions are predicted, write a balanced equation for each reaction and identify the bonds being broken and those being formed.
