Part 1: Preparing TLC Plates

To prepare your first TLC plate, draw a horizontal line near the bottom of the plate, then add five tick marks to that line: one for each compound you will be spotting. Be sure to make yourself a key so you can remember what you spotted in each lane. In Part 1 of this lab, we will spot our five chemicals in the following way.

Lane 1: As - (aspirin)

Lane 2: Ac - (acetaminophen)

Lane 3: B (biphenyl)

Lane 4: C (caffeine)

Lane 5: I (ibuprofen)

Which TLC plate will you use: Plate 1A or Plate 1B?
