Dr. Yarimar Bonilla will give a public lecture and join us for a conversation with graduate students on April 15.
Public Lecture: Under the current administration, the United States has revived an overtly expansionist agenda, marked by renewed territorial ambitions extending from Canada to Greenland. Rather than viewing this as a rupture in U.S. foreign policy and diplomacy, this talk argues that such moves simply expose the longstanding contradictions at the heart of the so-called “Empire of Liberty.” Drawing on legal history, political theory, and visual analysis, it returns to an earlier moment of imperial expansion – centered on Puerto Rico – to uncover the tensions between democratic ideals and imperial practice that have structured U.S. power from its inception. Graduate Student Lunch: Professor Bonilla will also lead a conversation on public scholarship for graduate students. Lunch will be provided. Space is limited! Apply here: bit.ly/yarimaratcal
