Which test should you take? Here are some general tips:
If you are considering majoring in STEM such as Nursing or Engineering, it's recommended that you take the ACT to show your science skills
Most schools accept the SAT, so consider starting here
While the writing portion is optional, opt in as some schools require this for admissions
SENIORS: THE LAST DATE TO TAKE THE SAT/ACT FOR COLLEGE IS DECEMBER HOWEVER I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU TAKE THE TEST BEFORE THE FINAL DATE
May be required for admission to Private/Out of State Schools
If applying to UC's, could make a student ELC eligible (ELC students not admitted to any of their UC campus choices are offered a spot at a UC campus that has space)
May be considered in college app review
May demonstrate strength not reflected in grades
May meet certain A-G requirements
May meet certain graduation requirements for some campuses
May be used for placement and some scholarships
Not applying to schools outside of the UC/CSU system
May not reflect potential to succeed in college
UC/CSU apps without test scores receive same full review
Eliminates one element of stress for juniors and seniors
No decision is ever based on a single factor. It is recommended that students speak with Counselor and/or Adviser to help them in this decision making process
Freshmen applicants are required to take either the SAT or ACT for entrance to UC's, CSU's, and many Private and Out of State institutions. Check with your institution for entrance exam requirements.
