Students working on Faculty-led projects are advised/supported by:
Faculty, who is the Instructor of Record.
PhD student(s) working closely with Faculty on the project.
There’s a variety of different project configurations. For example, Capstone teams may:
Be the principal lead of a particular project (e.g., Next Gen 3D Materials)
Work alongside another MEng team on a multi-team project (e.g., Intellicare)
Be a part of an MEng project lab where three or more MEng teams collaborate on a multi-dimensional project (e.g., Patent Analysis Using Machine Learning)
Be a part of a faculty’s member’s lab and work together with their PhD students (e.g., Million Hands)
Work with your advisor’s partners outside the university (e.g., Brain Cell Rejuvenation)
UC Berkeley faculty need to comply with UCOP Policy on Export Control.
Students working on Industry-led project, students are advised/supported by:
Industry advisor(s)/ technical expert(s) of the company.
Every industry-led project has a Faculty Liaison who is your Instructor of Record. Your Faculty Liaison is a representative from the College of Engineering that teams need to meet with once a month and is a great resource if teams are encountering technical roadblocks and need support or guidance.
There’s a variety of partners. MEng Capstone teams have worked with:
Industry (e.g., GM’s Energy Impact of Autonomous Vehicles)
National Labs (e.g., LBNL’s Numa)
Academic Institutions (e.g., UCSF’s CalCardiac)
*All partner projects have a faculty liaison: a representative from within the UC Berkeley College of Engineering who will ensure progress with periodic check-ins.
Partner advisors are encouraged to ensure that any information shared with students is consistent with internal company policies.
Some companies may ask students to sign Non Disclosure Agreements (NDA) to protect their confidential information. If a company requires an NDA, students should inform their Faculty Liaison and the Director Capstone Experience before executing these agreements. Please ensure that you are in compliance.
If no NDA or IP agreement are required, this should be noted. Compliance to this policy is critical to maintain the safe handling of IP and avoid IP ownership issues down the road.
Regardless whether an NDA is signed, all students are expected to behave in a manner that protects any company confidential material. This may mean excluding specific details from reports and presentations. When in doubt, students should always seek guidance of their industry advisor.
