Vaughn Family,
As we reflect on the events of October, we are filled with gratitude for the memories made and the joy shared. Students and staff enjoyed a fun-filled month, from exciting field trips to the creative costumes of Strong Choices Week and the community connections formed at our Fall Festival. We’re so thankful for everyone’s participation and support!
We’d also like to extend a sincere thank you to all the families who attended parent-teacher conferences. This is a wonderful time to celebrate your child’s success and discuss growth goals. If you haven’t yet had the chance to meet with your child’s teacher about first-quarter progress, don’t worry—they’ll reach out soon to reschedule.
As a friendly reminder, our school doors open at 7:00 a.m., and staff are on duty for supervision starting at that time. For your child’s safety, please do not drop off and leave your student before 7:00 a.m. If you need an earlier drop-off time, feel free to contact our partners at Discovery STEAM, who provide before- and after-school care. You can reach them at 479-412-0770 or via email at information@joindiscoverysteam.com to inquire about availability or to join their waitlist.
November brings a special focus on gratitude, and as we gear up for the season of generosity, we’ll continue to celebrate the importance of kindness, respect, and community in all we do. Together, let’s encourage our students to notice and appreciate the small acts of kindness around them. We look forward to the meaningful experiences ahead, and as always, we’re grateful for your partnership in making Vaughn Elementary a warm and welcoming place to learn and grow.
With appreciation,
Kendra Schacht
Principal, Vaughn Elementary School

Hello Parents!
The colder weather will be upon us and with that more colds! Please make sure your student has a water bottle every day to keep hydrated. Students are not to carry medication so please make sure their medication is taken at home. It is VERY important that every student (Kindergarten through 4th grade) has an extra set of clothes in their backpacks for accidents and spills. If they do not, we will call for you to come and bring some in the event this occurs. Also, please make sure it is weather appropriate. November is Diabetes Awareness Month. Please wear blue on Thursday November 14th for World Diabetes Day to show support and to raise awareness about signs and symptoms. For more information, please check out www.katskause.org! The holidays are on their way and I wish you and your family a very healthy season!

Happy Fall from the Counselors! Our value this month is generosity. Generosity is not just about giving material things; it’s about giving kindness, support, and understanding to those around you. Be generous with your words and actions, and you’ll create a ripple effect of positivity in our school community.
Congratulations to our Vaughn 2024-25 Student Council representatives!
October was National Bullying Prevention Month and we had discussions with all classes about the difference between being rude, mean, and bullying. Be sure to review the common language with your child.
In November/December, we will be teaching personal safety using the district Empower Me Program. Topics covered include:
Check first with the adult in charge before going anywhere with anyone.
Identifying five trusted adults who make up their safety net.
Listening to their “uh-oh” feeling.
Saying “no” to anyone asking them to break a safety rule.
We talk about touches - Understanding that no touch should ever be a secret.

This Election Day, we’re hosting a Book Character Election in the library! In the primaries, students chose from two candidates from the People Party and two candidates from the Animal Party. Students will have the chance to vote for their favorite book character and learn about the importance of making choices on Election Tuesday! Students will also learn the importance of celebrating Veterans Day by learning about America's White Table.
Don’t forget about our ongoing reading challenges! Each grade level has its own goal to reach. Mrs. Hundley and I are here to support and help them!
This month, our kindergarteners are learning to distinguish between fiction and non-fiction. Fiction books tell imaginative stories, while non-fiction books provide real information about the world. Ask your child to share their favorite type of book!
First Graders will be reading stories and discussing how characters feel, act, and change throughout the tales. Encourage your child to talk about the characters in their favorite books and what makes them unique!
In second grade, students are focusing on identifying the main idea of a story. We’ll learn how to find the key points in what we read. At home, try reading a short story together and ask your child what they think the main idea is!
Third and fourth graders are mastering the online card catalog! We’ll teach them how to search for books by title, author, or subject. Did you know our library's Online Catalog can be found on our school's website. Just go to the library media center page for the link. Encourage your child to explore the catalog at home and find new books to check out for their reading adventures!
Happy Reading!
Hello Vaughn Families!
The month of November in P.E. is all about fitness! We will have various activities which focus on cardiovascular endurance (getting our heart rate up), as well as a few muscular strength activities (working to make our muscles stronger). We will also focus on flexibility and stretching. We will explore these concepts with some fun activities including basic balancing and tumbling, parachute activities, and jump rope activities. We love working with your students! - Coach Mackey, Coach Lavalle, and Coach McFadden
Hey everyone! It's been an awesome time in art class! The kid's artworks are turning out great and I can't wait for the next round of projects. Kindergarten is learning how to follow step by step directions to create a dinosaur multimedia project, 1st grade is learning how to make Laurel Burch cats, 2nd grade is about to jump into printmaking, 3rd grade is making some insanely cool Geaorge rodrigue Blue Dogs, and 4th grade is doing a STEM printmaking underwater portrait!
I hope everyone had an amazing Halloween and I'm pumped to see the kid's beautiful masterpieces!
Kindergarten students will be introduced to concepts of pitch and singing. You can help your child by noticing different sounds/voices and identifying if the pitch is high or low.
First grade students will be learning the basics about singing and breathing. Encourage your child to sing a variety of songs.
Second grade students will be playing open strings and the C chord on ukuleles.
Third grade is learning how to play open strings and the chords C and F on ukuleles.
Fourth grade students are learning how to play open strings and the chords C, F and G on ukuleles.
Hello!
The students have been doing an outstanding job learning about different cultures, and their respect for these traditions is truly amazing. I love how, even though they may have never experienced certain activities before, they always make an effort to try. Dancing samba was a perfect example of this spirit! They “survived the Amazon,” learned a couple survival skills (hopefully), and enjoyed many fascinating stories about the region's traditions during this time. As we wrap up our exploration of South America, I’m excited to transition to Europe very soon. I can’t wait to introduce them to all the wonderful places and experiences that await us during this season!
Hello from Digital Literacy!
Kindergarten - 1st Grade:
Our youngest learners have been exploring the symbols of technology. They have been introduced to common symbols found on devices, helping them understand their functions and how to navigate technology safely. Through interactive activities, students have learned to identify icons and their meanings, laying a strong foundation for future digital skills.
2nd - 4th Grade:
Students in the 2nd to 4th grades have been diving into the world of Google. They are becoming familiar with various Google tools, such as Google Docs and Google Slides, and learning how to utilize these platforms for collaboration and creativity.
As always, all grades are practicing good online safety skills. We emphasize the importance of protecting personal information, recognizing safe and unsafe online behaviors, and understanding the significance of respectful communication in the digital world.
We are excited to see our students grow in their digital literacy skills! Thank you for your continued support at home.
Our fourth graders have been busy this fall! In literacy, we are wrapping up our engaging unit on the Middle Ages and preparing to dive into the world of poetry. In math, we’re focusing on area and perimeter, helping students understand how to measure and calculate spaces. We're also exploring multiplication and division, building a solid foundation for more complex concepts. In science, our young scientists are discovering the fascinating world of waves and how they facilitate communication. It's been a hands-on journey filled with experiments and discussions!
As part of Third Grade’s Human Body literacy unit, BPS’ Medical Ignite students came to VES to teach students about CPR and how to stop a bleed. Students got to practice both with hands-on activities. Attached are pictures.
In October, 2nd grade students embarked on an exciting field trip to the Hunt Family Nature Center. During their visit, the students had the opportunity to engage in a variety of hands-on learning activities that allowed them to develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world around them. The students learned about animals native to Arkansas, made animal tracks out of soap, practiced casting a fishing line, and observed animals. They even got to hold a snake!
Students in Mrs. Lasiter's class are collaborating to illustrate pictures that retell a sequence of events in order.
In Kindergarten we are learning about blending letter sounds to make words, adding one more, shapes, and living things. We are starting our own radish plants and are excited to see how they grow over the next couple of weeks. We enjoyed our Fall Parties!
