After four wintery days at home last week, we're excited to kick off February with a full week of learning and reading together! On Friday, we launched All Bentonville Readsy by announcing this year's book: Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library. This district-wide initiative is designed to promote family bonding and a love for reading.
Throughout the month, students and staff will enjoy opportunities to engage with the book through classroom discussions, schoolwide activities, and shared experiences. It's a special way for our entire VES community to connect through one story and we hope you family joins in the fun!
Join us for the culminating celebration at Crystal Bridges Museum on Sunday, March 1st. The event will feature games, crafts, and a variety of activities for families to enjoy together.
Happy Reading!

As part of our Building Futures @ VES focus, we invite families to share feedback on their child’s STEM experiences at Vaughn Elementary. We are currently reviewing our STEM strategic plan, and family input is an important part of that process. We have also applied for STEM Model School redesignation and hope to host a review visit from the state in March. Your perspectives help us reflect on what is working well and identify opportunities to continue strengthening hands-on, meaningful learning experiences for our students. Thank you for taking a few moments to complete the survey and for partnering with us in building strong futures for our Eagles.

Due to the snow days, our 3rd and 4th grade students were unable to take the ATLAS interim assessments last week. They will take those assessments February 2nd-5th. Testing begins at 7:50 each day. Please ensure your child arrives to school on time so they can begin the assessment with their class.
Mon. Feb. 2 - Reading
Tues. Feb. 3 - Math
Wed. Feb. 4 - Science
Thurs. Feb. 5 - Writing
How families can help students prepare:
Ensure students arrive at school on time on assessment days
Avoid scheduling appointments during the school day whenever possible
Encourage your child to do their best and show what they know—no extra studying is required
Thank you for your partnership as we use this information to strengthen instruction and support every learner.

Hello Parents!
With all of this cold weather, it is a wonderful reminder to check your student's backpack and make sure they have a set of weather appropriate change of clothes. All students should have a set of clothes for accidents, spills, nosebleeds, etc. February is American Heart Month and National Children's Dental Health month. It is so important for all of our students to be getting 60 minutes of movement and exercise a day and that they brush their teeth twice daily and floss. Regular dental check ups are very important as well. National Red Day for heart health is February 6th! Feel free to wear red and show your heart some love. Wishing you all a lovely and healthy February!
Another fun-filled month ahead! If you have questions email vaughnptopresident@gmail.com

It’s an exciting time in our library! All Bentonville Reads has kicked off! Our school—along with the other Bentonville elementary schools—is reading Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library. This exciting story is filled with games, clues, teamwork, and—of course—lots of books! As students follow the characters through Mr. Lemoncello’s incredible library, they’ll see how reading, problem-solving, and creativity can unlock amazing adventures. We hope you can carve out time each night to read together as a family and enjoy the fun. Ask your child about the puzzles, favorite characters, or what they would do if they were trapped in Mr. Lemoncello’s library!
Mark your calendars! Our Book Fair will be held at the end of February and the first of March. More details will be coming soon—we can’t wait to celebrate books with our students!
Each grade level is diving into fun and meaningful reading lessons as we build strong readers and thoughtful thinkers.
Kindergarten students are learning about rhyming books and enjoying stories with playful sounds and repeating patterns.
First Grade is exploring how authors use interesting and powerful verbs to make their writing come alive.
Second Grade is learning all about persuasive writing, and we are reading books that try to change a reader’s mind or convince them of something.
Third Grade students are studying how characters change over time and how events in a story help shape who they become.
Fourth Grade is focusing on setting and discovering how the time and place of a story can affect the plot in big ways.
Vaughn Artists:
Kindergarten and 1st grade have learned about perspective. We made Snowmen from Bird's Eye View and Worm's Eye View. The 2nd graders worked with clay this month. They Will start to Glaze their work once it comes out of the kiln. The 3rd and 4th graders talked about contour lines, Monochromatic color schemes and tints while painting "Neon Snowmen".
Hello, everyone!
This month in Digital Literacy, our students have been engaging in a variety of exciting activities.
Kindergarten and 1st Grade: They have been honing their typing skills and exploring the concept of data.
2nd Grade: Our second graders have been focusing on visual mapping skills and developing their keyboarding abilities.
3rd and 4th Grade: These students have been practicing their typing skills with their hands covered, in preparation for the upcoming Great Keyboarding Race competition in March.
As always, we prioritize discussions around digital safety to ensure our students are well-informed.
Thank you for your continued support!
Hello Vaughn Families!! February is HEART MONTH! I am so happy to let you know that through the Kids Heart Challenge Event, our students raised more than $3500.00 for the American Heart Association! This opportunity was such a wonderful way to spread awareness to our school community and families about heart disease – while the students learned heart healthy habits! Thank you so much for participating!
In the month of February, our focus will remain on cardiovascular health and the importance of keeping our hearts strong and healthy. February is the perfect time to teach students the importance of staying active and building lifelong healthy habits. This month's activities include jump rope challenges, various relays, team activities, and fitness circuits. We LOVE moving in PE!

4th grade has been cozying up to learning to start the 3rd quarter! We have begun our novel study over the book, "The Season of Styx Malone". We are exploring a variety of figurative language and having lots of discussions about what the author really means when they use it.
We have also started our biggest unit of the year in math-FRACTIONS! We have started to identify the basics of fractions and apply what we know to finding equivalent fractions. We will extend this knowledge throughout the remainder of the year. Any way you cut it, it sounds like a good time :)
Third graders had a busy and exciting month of learning! During our Viking Age Unit, students explored myths and legends—including stories about Vikings—to build reading skills, grow vocabulary, and share ideas through discussion. We wrapped up our Vikings study with fun, hands-on STEM challenges, where students built Viking ships, created life-sized models using measurement skills, and connected their learning to literature. In math, students focused on area, learning how to measure and find the space inside shapes through drawing, hands-on activities, and problem-solving. It was a great month of learning, creativity, and teamwork!
Second graders have been busy with math and literacy learning! In math, students have been learning all about time, including understanding AM and PM and telling time to the nearest five minutes. In literacy, we wrapped up our unit on westward expansion. Students read and wrote about pioneer life and shared what they would choose to bring with them on a journey out west. As a grade, we also enjoyed playing a version of the famous Oregon Trail game to bring history to life.
First graders wrapped up their Knowledge unit on the history of Earth by digging for fossils. These little paleontologists used tools to excavate fossils (chocolate chips) from the ground (chocolate chip cookies). Then, they reported their findings.
Kindergarten learned there were many different tribes of Native Americans, and that each tribe had its own way of eating, dressing, and living. To finish the unit, students painted using items found in nature like charcoal, berries, and flowers.

In February, our Vaughn counselors will continue visiting classrooms in grades K–4 to teach lessons on conflict resolution using the Conscious Discipline Time Machine Mat. Students will practice slowing down, calming their bodies, and talking through problems step by step. They will learn how to use respectful words, listen to others, and work together to find solutions that feel fair and safe. Through modeling and guided practice, the Time Machine Mat helps students reflect on what happened, take responsibility, and make helpful choices moving forward. Our goal is to build empathy, self-control, and stronger friendships across our school community.
Through the counseling department we offer customizable food boxes for families in need of food support, in partnership with the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank and their Order Ahead program.
