May is always a busy and exciting time at VES. Be sure to check the calendar below for important dates, including field day, end of year celebrations, and the last day of school for students on Tuesday, May 27th.
As we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our entire VES staff. Their commitment to supporting every learner—every day—is what makes our school such a special place to learn and grow. Thank you for joining us in recognizing their hard work and dedication.
I also want to give a big thank you to our amazing PTO, who has gone above and beyond this year to support both students and staff. From organizing events to providing classroom resources, your partnership has made a difference in so many ways.
I’d also like to take a moment to share some bittersweet news—Mr. Timbrel, our incredible music teacher, has accepted a new role as the Arts Integration Coach at Sugar Creek Elementary for the 2025–2026 school year. While we will deeply miss his dynamic personality and the joy he brings to both students and staff, we are so proud of him and excited for this next chapter in his career. Our hiring committee is currently working to find new music and art teachers to continue providing our students with outstanding creative experiences.
Thank you for your continued support as we wrap up a great year at VES!
Has a staff member gone above and beyond for your child or family? If so, please let us know by completing the Staff Shout Out form.

Hello Parents!
Summer is almost here and with that warmer weather. It is so important that students bring a fresh water bottle daily. Hydration is so important. Please remember that all medications and supplies in the nurse office must be picked up by 3pm on the last day of school. It has been a pleasure caring for your students and I wish you all a safe and healthy summer!
Happy May Vaughn Families!

As we get closer to the end of the school year, in the last couple weeks students will dive deep into exploring the differences between countries and states. We will also be diving into the sea, discovering its vastness and the incredible variety of creatures that inhabit it. From colorful coral reefs to mysterious deep-sea dwellers, this exploration will help students understand the importance of marine life and the need for its conservation. To cap off the school year, we will have game day during global. Which will feature games from around the world. Among the highlights will be the popular game of Loteria, which is always a fan favorite.
Happy summer!
This month in Digital Literacy, we've been having a blast improving our keyboarding skills—typing faster and more accurately! We've also been chatting about algorithms and how they play a role in our daily lives. It’s been fun exploring how technology works!
Fourth Grade
We’re kicking off an exciting new unit in Literacy called Eureka!, where students will explore the world of inventors and become creative problem-solvers themselves. In Math, we’re diving into measuring angles using a variety of tools—it’s a great hands-on way to learn! As we approach ATLAS testing (May 5–12), please help your child do their best by ensuring they get plenty of rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time ready to focus. There are lots of fun activities planned to celebrate the end of 4th grade, and we can’t wait to make these final weeks both memorable and meaningful!
Third grade finished Unit 9, The Age of Exploration, in Literacy. Students learned the reasons for European exploration, what exploration was like, and who went exploring. They also learned about navigation and life on a ship, and locations reached by specific explorers.
In Math students developed an understanding of fractions as numbers. They partitioned a whole into equal parts and recognized 1 of a fractional unit as a unit fraction. Students also composed non-unit fractions from unit fractions and used visual & written fraction models to represent parts of a whole.
Rainy weather brought indoor recess and students enjoyed building, playing games, and drawing with friends!
Our 2nd grade doctors worked cooperatively to build and label systems of the body. It was a fun way to show what they learned during our Knowledge unit about the human body.
1st Grade
First graders have been working hard in their WIN Groups to increase their reading fluency by playing Tricky Word Jenga! Other first graders have been building fluency by participating in a Reader’s Theatre complete with costumes and performance with the help of our awesome teacher’s aides. These big firsties are preparing to take flight as fluent readers in second grade!! 🦅📖
Exciting Book Tasting Experience in Kindergarten!
This month, our kindergarten classes embarked on a delightful literary adventure as they rotated through each other's classrooms for a special Book Tasting event! Students explored a variety of engaging genres, including Farms, Construction, Movies, Sweet Shop, Pets, and Zoo.
All of the books featured during this event came from our school library, allowing students to immerse themselves in captivating stories while discovering new interests. After tasting these literary delights, each student made a list of their favorite titles, ensuring they could check them out throughout the year.
This collaborative experience not only sparked a love for reading but also fostered a sense of community among our kindergarten classes. We are so proud of our little learners for their enthusiasm and curiosity!
As we approach the end of another school year, we want to take a moment to reflect on the memories we have made with our Vaughn Eagles. This year has been filled with moments of joy, lots of learning, and fun, and has been our privilege to be a part of it.
In our role as counselors, we've had the opportunity to support your children's social-emotional development, helping them navigate the ups and downs of being a kid with empathy and understanding and guiding them in their choices. Whether it is providing a listening ear, teaching coping strategies, conflict resolution, or fostering positive communication skills, we are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment where every child feels valued and respected.
We hope your families have a wonderful summer break! If you are moving on to middle school, we wish you well.
