As we move into the final weeks of the school year, there is a lot to celebrate at Vaughn Elementary. Our students and staff have worked hard all year, and it shows in classrooms, in relationships, and in the growth we are seeing across our building. From end-of-year learning experiences and field trips to schoolwide events and celebrations, May is a time to reflect on progress while finishing strong.
You will also see a variety of end-of-year events highlighted in this month’s newsletter, including grade-level celebrations, field day, and opportunities for families to stay connected to the learning happening in our classrooms. These moments are important for our students and a great way to close out a successful year together.
We are excited to welcome our future Eagles and their families to Vaughn Elementary for Kindergarten Family Night on Tuesday, May 12. This event is designed for incoming Kindergarten students for the 2026–2027 school year and will give families a chance to meet our teachers and learn more about what to expect in Kindergarten. If you have an incoming Kindergarten student or know a family who does, we encourage you to attend.
I want to take a moment to thank you for your partnership, support, and trust. It has been an honor to serve this community. Vaughn is a special place because of the people who make it what it is each day.
Let’s finish the year strong - together.
Kendra Schacht
Principal
Vaughn Elementary School

Hello Parents!
Summer is almost here. Can you believe it? It has been an absolute joy looking after your students. I wish them a healthy and safe summer with lots of outdoor fun full of sunshine, sunscreen, hydration, and memories. Please remember that if your student has medication in the nurse's office, that it must be picked up by 3pm on our last day of school (May 27th) or it will be destroyed. If your student will need medication or a health care plan for next year, please get your appointments arranged so that a new plan and/or order is completed by their doctor before school starts. If you have any questions on what you may need, please do not hesitate to contact me. My email is bclupny@bentonvillek12.org. Happy Summer to you and your family!

As we begin to wrap up another wonderful school year, I want to thank all of our students and families for supporting the elementary library. It has been a joy to see so many students discovering new stories, exploring new topics, and growing as readers this year!
As the school year comes to a close, please make note of these important library dates:
Last day to check out books: May 8
All library books due: May 15
Please help your child look around at home for any library books that may still be hiding on shelves, under beds, or in backpacks so we can get everything returned before summer break.
Great news—the Summer Book Bus will be returning this summer with a few changes!
Due to summer playground maintenance, we will not have Park and Play at the school this year. Instead, we are adding a few new stops around the community to make it even easier for families to join us.
The Book Bus will run every other week beginning June 9. We look forward to bringing books, smiles, and summer reading fun to our students all summer long! Be on the lookout for more information!
Thank you for a fantastic school year, and happy reading!
K: We are hard at work on our program for the Kindergarten Celebration based on the book Pete the Cat's Groovy Imagination. I can't wait for you to see how hard these kids have worked to create a special program.
1: We are working to create a song in class. This involves cooperating together to develop rhyming lines of lyrics to set to music.
2: Students are working solo or with a partner to write rhyming lyrics about an assigned topic. We'll work to put them together in a song.
3: We wrapped up our recorder unit and it was so much fun! Now students will be working solo or with a partner to write rhyming lyrics about an assigned topic. We'll work to put them together in a song.
4: Students are still playing recorders. They sound better each time we come to class.
Vaughn Elementary students have also been working hard for their upcoming musical of ❄️Disney’s Frozen KIDS! ❄️ Come support our amazing performers as they take the stage on May 11th and May 14th at 6:00 PM. It’s a show the whole family will love!
As we head into the final stretch of the school year, we will be focusing on strengthening the skills we've learned all year long. We will revisit movements, games, and activities to build confidence and finish the year strong! We will get outside whenever possible for some fresh air and fun! Our kindergarten and first grade students have something exciting to look forward to - they'll be learning and practicing on balance bikes! This is a great way to build coordination and confidence! Finally, our school Field Day will be on Friday, May 22nd. Be looking for more information in the next couple of weeks regarding that day! We are looking forward to a wonderful month of May!

Vaughn Artists: All students are hard at work putting the finishing touches on their latest projects, from vibrant paintings to unique clay sculptures. As we wrap up these final creations, students are also busy assembling their art portfolios. These portfolios are such a special way for the kids to collect all their artwork, see how much they’ve grown as artists, and have a beautiful collection of their creativity to share with you at home. I can’t wait for you to see the amazing progress they've made!
Hello from Digital Literacy! We are nearing the end of the year and are reviewing what we have learned in DL class. We are reviewing internet safety, computational thinking, data entry, and keyboarding. Students have been learning about algorithms as well.
4th grade had a great time playing with laser mazes at STEM night with all that attended! We have been busy reading Treasure Island and writing our very own adventure stories. We had to put them on pause for ATLAS testing, but we can't wait to get back to our writing! We have also been learning a lot of new skills in math this month, learning how to measure angles with a protractor and classify triangles based on their sides and angle measurements. We are looking forward to our last month here at Vaughn and all of the learning that we still have to do!
Our third graders have been working hard all year mastering key standards, and this month has been all about practicing and reviewing for ATLAS. Students are now taking the ATLAS summative assessments, giving them a chance to show how much they’ve learned and grown. We are incredibly proud of their effort, focus, and perseverance. Thank you to our families for your continued support in helping students come to school rested, prepared, and ready to shine.
Second grade has been hard at work diving into our study of the human body systems! After learning about how the different systems function and work together, students had the exciting opportunity to participate in a special “Surgery Day.”
During this hands-on experience, students collaborated with participants from the Ignite Health Program, who helped guide and support them as they demonstrated their understanding. It was a fun and engaging way for students to apply what they’ve learned in a real-world context, and they did an incredible job showcasing their knowledge!
First graders took a field trip to the Walton Arts Center to watch a performance of Billy Goats Gruff and Other Stories. The students enjoyed the show and bus ride!
Kindergarten students had a wonderful time celebrating their CKLA Knowledge end-of-unit review with hands-on activities focused on Colonial America! Students rotated through engaging stations led by our kindergarten teachers, bringing colonial jobs and daily life to life. They explored the work of a baker by rolling playdough dough, churned butter while learning about dairy farmers, used construction paper to practice weaving, developed sewing and fine motor skills while learning about the work of a seamstress and tailor, made leather key chains inspired by blacksmiths, and built as carpenters using Lincoln Logs and other building supplies. These interactive experiences helped students review their learning in meaningful, memorable ways while having lots of fun. We are so proud of their enthusiasm, teamwork, and excitement during this special day of learning!

Dear Vaughn Families,
It has truly been a joy supporting our students and watching them learn and grow this year. I am grateful for the opportunity I’ve had to work with your children and be part of such a special school family.
Once the school year comes to a close, I will be transitioning out of my role as the part-time school counselor, as I have accepted a full time counseling position at another Bentonville elementary school next year. While I am looking forward to this next chapter, it is very bittersweet to say goodbye to a community that means so much to me.
Thank you for your support, trust, and partnership. I will always carry the memories and connections from this school with me. I wish all of you a safe, restful, and fun-filled summer.
With gratitude,
Jalynn Mayo
