Welcome to our class!
Community Based Instruction (CBI) is designed for students that need intensive instruction in functional and daily living skills. CBI is educational instruction in naturally occurring community environments providing students with “real life experiences.” The goal is to provide a variety of hands-on learning opportunities at all age levels to help students acquire the skills to live in the world today. Community is defined as the school, home and city community environments in the location the student lives.
A key to CBI is to offer experiences across settings and time periods to promote generalization. CBI enhances community inclusion with students without disabilities, employers, family and other community members, ultimately enhancing an individual’s quality of life.
About your Teacher and our Wonderful CBI Staff
Hello! My name is Mary Jo Shelnut and I am so glad to be your student's teacher! I have been teaching for 19 years and 17 of those years have been in a Special Education Classroom. I hold a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Education and a Master's of Science degree in Special Education. I love teaching Special Education and using my creativity to help find different ways to build skills and make learning accessible to all of my students. I love all things Disney and you will see many references to it within our classroom. I love being crafty, reading, drawing, cooking, and doing things with my family. I try to incorporate my love of all of these things into our classroom along with the likes and interests of our students.
We are considered a Unified Champion School with Special Olympics which means we have great partnerships with our gen ed classrooms. We will be doing the Spring Games with Special Olympics this year and developing our own Fall Games where we will invite our other district elementary CBI classes to participate with us as well as some of our gen ed peers. We also have many community outings planned to go with our monthly units of study. We are going to have a fun and wonderful year!!!!
Ms. Angela is the first of our incredible paraprofessionals and has been supporting students for 17 years. She is always full of creative ideas and is constantly thinking of fun, meaningful ways to engage our students. When she's not at school, she enjoys spending time with her family—and never turns down the chance for a good nap!
Ms. Amber is another wonderful member of our CBI team. This is her 4th year as a paraprofessional. She is truly a ray of sunshine whose kindness and encouragement brighten every day. In her free time, she enjoys watching movies, painting, and making memories with her family.
Ms. Typhani is also in her 4th year as a paraprofessional and brings endless energy and creativity to our classroom. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and she's always finding new ways to make learning exciting. She enjoys cooking, organizing, and spending quality time with her family.
Ms. Bonnie rounds out our amazing CBI team! Although this is her 4th year working with us, this is her first year as a full-time member of our classroom. She is always on the move, loves staying busy, and is the first to jump into any project with enthusiasm. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with her family, creating diamond art, and always has a project going.
