All of the Deaf children have a daily session in the Deaf Base classroom to work alongside their Deaf peers. These sessions are bespoke to the children’s needs and include topics they may need additional experience of, Deaf culture and language development activities.
In this term’s DPE sessions the children will be learning about:
Current affairs and news around the world.
Language development, 'collective nouns' and visual literacy.
'How to be extraordinary' - Famous and inspirational people.
Multi-channel signs.
Deaf role models - creating fact files about them and hopefully meeting some.
Black History Month
Today is our Summer fair. We are really excited!
Today we went on our Deaf Base trip to The West Midlands Safari park.
We all had a brilliant day and learned lots about habitats and all about animal living in the wild.
Abbas said "It's the best day"!!
Today in Homonyms we looked at 'jam'
Did you know that jam is in the words traffic jam? and doesn't mean the same as spreading jam on our toast.
Today was our school tranisition day, We were all excited to meet our new teachers.

Monday 19th June
Today in idioms, we recapped some of the idioms we have previously learned. Such as:
it's raining cats and dogs. (Raining very heavily)
and
hold your horses. (have some patience)
Today's idiom is 'it's in one ear and out the other ear' (meaning they're not paying attention)
Our year 5 child was telling us all about her visit to Pakistan.
Today, we held our annual inspire day where all the deaf children in the Walsall borough were invited to join us.
We had the animal man in and the children really enjoyed it.

we didnt realise there were so many different meanings.
Today year 3 went to Dudley canals for their Geography trip.

I never realised that so there were so many words that sound the same and mean completley diffrent things,

How lucky were we? For Deaf Awareness week we had a very special visitor. One of our Deaf role models.
Fletch came to our school to teach us a signed song, then our Deaf children got up in assembly and taught the whole school. Wow!!

This week we have been learning more about animals and their habitats. We then did an animal sorting activity.

Today in multi channels we learned the multi channel sign fantastic. Watch our year 5 child signing and explaining the multi channel sign.
We had a lovely afternoon walking up to King Charles Primary to use the immersion room. Year 5 signed their Ancient Greek reports, Year 3 their story about 'The secret of Black Rock'. Our year 2 child read his non-chronological report about inuits.
This week we have been learning about different types of animals.
Today we had an Idioms session,
We learned what the idiom 'don't let the cat out of the bag means'.
Today we concluded our Ancient Greek History topic. Our year 5 children have loved learning about the Ancient Greeks. Here is a picture of Abbas 's work. He told me that he liked Zeus as he was the god of the sky.
In our PSHE lessons we have been learning about helping others, we collected some food and took it to our local food bank. The children were amazed at the process.

Today we welcomed a very special visitor into our Deaf Base as part of our Role models topic.
Meet 'Nikita Hitchen' an absolute inspiration to Deaf children everywhere. She has been so busy lately, winning the World Cup in Italy. She plays futsal for the England Deaf Ladies Futsal Team. What's amazing is that she found time to come and see us at Bentley West! Thank you Nikita.
We're very proud of you Nikita! Nikita came to Bentley West School as a child and had lots of favourite memories to share.

Today we went to Wolverhampton Grand Theatre to see the performance of Aladdin.
Abbas said he "was happy and excited, I liked it"

We have been learning about Aladdin in preparation for the pantomime tomorrow.
We're of to see the Wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz ....... oh no were not.
Tomorrow we are going to the pantomime to watch Aladdin.

The children continued to think about the sounds around them this week. They sorted them into loud and quiet sounds. The children were very confident with their answers.

In this module of PUDs we are discussing sound. The children were thinking of things around them that made noise. We listen to some of the sound the children listed. The sound made by fast cars was Abbas' particular favourite.
