"Marie" is my middle name, so I’m kind of creating this alternate persona of myself and singing to her in that song. It's about feeling utterly adrift in regards to where you are in life, and asking yourself in the future-- supposedly a version of you that has it under control and has found happiness-- what to do.
“DLN” is a song about the period of radio silence following a breakup. Specifically, the period of time in some relationships where there is no talking or interaction, and you begin to lose touch with who that person is, and the parts of you that were formed while with that person.
Most of the songs I write are about coming into oneself, and other existential matters. They are meant to traverse the personal-social divide, with the goal that the subject matter, though very intimate, can be reached by others. I grew up playing violin, and much of my personal songwriting is done on piano or guitar, but I don’t think my songs are meant to live in a purely acoustic or “band” space. Some artists and bands I've been taking recent inspiration from include Stereolab, Jon Bap, Anna Wise, Liv.e, Sudan Archives, and Thom Yorke. In my upcoming album, I hope to pull my disparate influences together, and begin to carve out my sonic space.
