This policy proposal backed by the student council was prepared and handed over to the President by the International students of the College addressing several immediate issues eg. International Student Orientation, summer housing pricing and summer storage options for International Students. The issues were addressed by the Cabinet in different ways a detail of which was sent out by the President to the student body via an Email.
Policy Proposal 3 argues that Bennington College Students should have unrestricted access to free harm reduction medication eg. Narcan; an overdose reversal medication that will help keep the Bennington community safe from the ongoing fentanyl epidemic. Giving students access to harm reduction material will further strengthen the college's relationship with Turning Point, the local drug and alcohol recovery center & establish a safe environment for our students.
This is the response of the student council on the proposal of the student life installing cameras in the student center to reduce vandalism or to trace individuals responsible for vandalism of campus property. Student Council believes cameras are drastic measures and should only implemented should all other initiatives fail and the decision of installing cameras must be made by a general referendum of the student body. The decision made was informed to Student life.
Policy Proposal 2 argues that all budget allocation information should be released to the student body to establish a culture of transparency and accountability. The Policy argues as a community it is our right to know where the tuition revenue is being spent and be a part of that decision making. The policy also argues that for sustainable and reasonable policy proposals from the student body it is important for us to know the budget information of the college. The policy also proposes alternatives to the primary proposal.
The first policy proposal by the student council is titled "EQUITABLE FIELD WORK TERM (FWT) STIPEND FOR FIRST GENERATION, LOW INCOME &/ WORKING CLASS (FLoW) STUDENTS"; where the student council argues that the stipend offered for Field Work Term to the FLoW students should be raised to 1000 USD instead of the current 500 USD structure. Alternatives are offered should the primary proposals are not sustainable to the financial structure of Bennington.
