The School of Multidisciplinary Studies helps strengthen the thrust of the College by providing inclusive and innovative General Education Programs that serve diversely gifted learners from various Schools of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.
In association with our partners in the education mission, we are guided by the Lasallian principles and philosophy to deliver quality inclusive education that promotes the Benildean Expressions and culture. SMS facilitates the multidisciplinary learning experiences of students to equip them with the Intellectual competencies, practical skills, and personal and civic responsibilities to empower them to pursue the common good, thus preparing them for life.
The SMS Dean’s Office is under the Vice Chancellor for Academics. Thus, the SMS Dean is a member of the Academic Council.
Functions
Responsible for curriculum planning, development and implementation; promotes collaboration among the different schools, departments, and units under the office of the Vice Chancellor for Academics; recommends to the VCA, the Chairpersons of the seven areas in the General Education such as: Filipino, Natural Science, Social Science, Mathematics, Theology-Philosophy, English, and Physical Education; recommends to the HRS successful applicants for the position of operations assistant; acts as Chairperson of the hiring, promotion, reclassification (up to the rank of AP-7, renewal and permanency boards of SMS teaching faculty; recommends to the VCA the number of unit de-loading of SMS teaching faculty which are assigned special non-permanent projects/tasks; convenes the SMS council, which enacts and promulgate rules, policies, guidelines, procedures, etc. for the entire SMS and GE programs.
The overarching function of the SMS Dean is to oversee the General Education Program of the entire College.
The English Area is the academic unit of the School of Multidisciplinary Studies which offers English Language and Literature courses for all programs offered in De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. The Area has a roster of faculty who are experts in engaging students in Language and Literature across various academic disciplines as “Benilde believes that each student is endowed by the Creator with talents and gifts, which the College nurtures in accordance with the individual’s learning style”. Thus, English Area Faculty are exemplary in teaching inclusive Language and Literature education keeping in mind that each student is different: “Your uniqueness reflects our way of teaching”. Ang Larang ng Filipino ay mayroong apat na kursong inihahain sa ilalim ng Paaralan ng Multidisiplinaryong Aralin (SMS), ito ay ang INTEFIL, FILDISI, MASIPAG at PANITIK. Ang Larang ng Filipino ay tumutugon sa mga layunin ng DLS-CSB sa mga programang pang-akademiko at multidisiplinaryong pangangailangan ng institusyon. Tinutupad ng larang ang pagkakaroon ng oryentasyong makabayan sa mga Benildyanong mag-aaral upang mapaunlad ang kanilang kamalayan sa kultura, panitikan, wika at lipunang Pilipino. Taglay ng larang ang pagpapakadalubhasa sa pagtuturo, pananaliksik, pagsasaling-wika at pagpapayaman ng wikang Filipino. Masigasig naman sa kasalukuyan ang Larang ng Filipino sa pagbuo ng mga epektibong gawain at kagamitang pampagtuturo para sa Benilde Online Learning kaalinsabay sa pagbabagong sistema ng pagtuturo at pagkatuto sa mga kursong inihahain nito.
The Mathematics Area is the unit in the School of Multidisciplinary Studies that is responsible for the instructional and curricular updates, development, and reforms of the mathematics courses under the General Education Program. The Mathematics Area, together with the other Areas of SMS helps the College in providing inclusive and innovative general education courses that serve diversely gifted learners from various schools of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.
The Natural Science Area is an office under the School of Multidisciplinary Studies that is in charge of handling natural science courses for all non-science programs at De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde. All faculty members are practicing pure science and education experts in their respective fields in the Physical and Life Sciences. The Area is a pioneer in translating and transmitting concepts of Sustainable Development to non-science majors for practical applications in the professional industry. Moreover, adherence to community service, values and moral code is implemented through its Service Learning Activities embedded in its Teaching and Learning strategies and methods.
Physical Education Area is tasked to promote fitness and wellness among the students through the different course offerings such as exercise, sports, dance, leisure and recreation. These courses highlights the importance of engaging in a regular physical activity to achieve health related fitness and to acquire positive personal and social behavior.
The Social Science Area through its course offerings in Readings in Philippine History, Contemporary World, Life and Works of Jose Rizal, Understanding the Self, and elective courses in Practical Economics and Peace Education, provide the students the foundation in Liberal Arts as mandated by CHED. The social science courses train the students to be more aware about issues that confront the individual citizen and the society in general. Through the course offerings, the critical thinking abilities of the students are honed and is essential to their holistic education complementing the other General Education offerings of the School of Multidisciplinary Studies.
The Theology and Philosophy Area of the School of Multidisciplinary Studies is mandated to provide academic and Christian formation to all Benildean students.
Following the Catholic identity of the institution, the Theophilo area offers a theological and philosophical studies that are grounded in the discipline pragmatic in approach, and responsive to the concrete needs of our learners; thus, contributing in preparing our young Benildeans for life.
1. The School of Multidisciplinary Studies or SMS is a service-school that caters to the General Education requirements of all the academic programs of the DLS-CSB;
2. The General Education Program of DLS-CSB consists of seven areas. These are English, Filipino, Mathematics, Natural Science, Physical Education, Social Science, and Theology and Philosophy areas;
3. Pursuant to the mandate of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the GEP must prepare the 21st century learners for life, the GEP of the DLS-CSB commits herself to this endeavor;
4. Through the inspiration of the Founder, Saint John Baptist de La Salle and our Patron, Saint Benilde Romancon, the school engages herself to operationalize inclusive education in all aspects of human and Christian education for the young especially the poor.
