In Reception, we have been developing our problem-solving skills through our continuous provision activities. The children have been working wonderfully as a team, sharing ideas, finding solutions, and supporting their friends along the way. It’s been fantastic to see their confidence and collaboration grow as they tackle new challenges together!
The children worked out they could balance the rulers across the pots, to get the bears safely across the lava!
The children wanted to see if they used the pens on the tissue paper, what would happen if they added drops of water!
Year 2 – Let’s Explore the World!
This week, Year 2 have started their exciting new Geography topic, ‘Let’s Explore the World!’ The children have had a wonderful time investigating atlases and globes to learn more about our world. They have also begun to understand compass directions and even took part in a traffic survey to put their geography skills into action. What a fantastic start to the topic!
This week, Year 4 have been learning about Aboriginal Art, exploring its history, meanings, and traditional techniques. We looked closely at dot painting and how artists use symbols and colour to tell stories. Inspired by what we discovered, we created our own stunning pieces of dot art.
Don’t they look beautiful?
Learning from Upper Key Stage 2....
This week, our Year 5 explorers have blasted off into their brand-new Science topic: The Solar System! They’ve been learning how to name and order the planets, discovering fascinating facts about each one, and imagining what it might be like to travel through space. They also completed a human solar system (as a class) complete with each planet, the sun and floating meteoroids.
In Geography, they took their focus back down to Earth as the children begun a new topic all about their local area. Using Ordnance Survey maps, they have learnt to read symbols, understand scale, and identify key features of the landscape around them.
It’s been a fantastic start to two exciting journeys — one across the universe and one right on our doorstep!
Thank you for all your blue tokens! We're delighted to let you know that we won first place! A grant of £1,500 will be coming our way. We will work with the School Council to see how we can use the money to create an Outdoor Learning Friendship Zone.
Our aim is to transform an outdoor space, to underpin two of our school values of health and kindness, creating areas that can be used by pupils and staff in lessons and at break times.
As we’ve now grown into a full two-form entry primary school, we’ve taken some time to review how we organise our productions across the year. With more children taking part than ever before, we needed to think carefully about everything, from rehearsal schedules to ensuring there’s enough room for all our excited mums, dads, and families in the audience!
We’re really looking forward to celebrating together and giving every child their chance to shine on stage. Our aim is to make sure every pupil has their special moment to perform and feel proud.
Please check the diary section of the newletter for upcoming dates! For now, here’s an overview of what’s in store this accademic year:
Nursery: Christmas Carols
Reception: Christmas Nativity
Key Stage 1: Spring Production
Year 3: Christmas Carols Around the Tree and Mince Pies (for parents and grandparents)
Years 4, 5 & 6: Carols at the Church
We can’t wait to see our talented pupils perform and to celebrate these special moments with you all!
Please note that from this term onwards, the bottom gate will be closed at 4:30pm each day. As there is no lighting on the bottom path, this measure has been put in place for health and safety reasons.
We kindly ask all parents and carers to use the Barnfield entrance for pick-up after 4:30pm.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
My name is Hollie and my son has just started in Reception. I am excited to be taking on the role of Parent Governor, contributing to school life and development and fairly representing parental perspective. My background is in education, working for many years as a primary school teacher and currently supporting students in a Special Educational Needs setting. I have previously worked as a School Governor and found the role to be hugely fulfilling so am looking forward to getting started at Belswains and working with you all over the next few years.
We are excited to celebrate World Religion Day on Monday 18th January 2026!
On this special day, we invite all children to come to school wearing clothing that represents their faith or culture. They are also welcome to bring in an item that is special to them and connected to their religion to share with their class.
To make the day even more special, we are delighted to be hosting Dance Days Workshops, who will be running Multicultural dance sessions for everyone throughout the day!
We would also love to welcome parents or grandparents who would like to come in and talk to a class about what their faith means to them. It’s a wonderful opportunity for the children to learn how faith and community are connected.
If you would be interested in taking part, please contact the school office at admin@belswian.herts.sch.uk.
We look forward to a joyful and enriching celebration together.
On Monday 10th November, we will be joining in with Odd Socks Day, inviting all pupils to wear odd socks to school in support of Anti-Bullying Week.
This fun and meaningful day celebrates individuality and reminds us that we are all unique and valued just as we are. It also reflects all of our school values:
Kindness – by showing care and support for others, and standing up against unkind behaviour.
Courage – by being confident to express ourselves and celebrate our differences.
Respect – by valuing what makes each person special and appreciating diversity.
Health – by promoting positive relationships and emotional wellbeing through inclusion and acceptance.
Let’s all take part and show that being different is something to be proud of!
Poppy Appeal
Our Year 6 pupils will be visiting classrooms with the Poppy Appeal collection of poppies and poppy bands. If your child would like one, please make a donation by popping it in a named envelope and send it in with your child.
We’re proud to once again support the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal here at Belswains, honouring the service and sacrifice of our armed forces. If your child would like to take part, please make sure they bring a small donation with them on the day.

An excuse to spring clean!
We are looking to refresh some of the games we have available for indoor play in the classrooms. If you have anything at home that you feel may be suitable, please drop to the school office and we'll distribute across the school. Thank you.
Mrs Claridge has begun leading school tours this term. If you know someone who is considering joining our community, please let them know that they can contact the school office on 01442 264 324 or via email at admin@belswains.herts.sch.uk to arrange a visit.
We are delighted to share that admissions to Belswains continue to be strong, bucking the national trend of falling pupil numbers due to the lower birth rate. This is a wonderful reflection of the school’s profile and reputation within our community.
For Reception 2025, we received an impressive 151 applications for just 60 places.
