It may not feel much like summer outside just yet, but the new term has begun and pupils are now welcome to wear their summer uniform.
If you’re new to our school community, the summer uniform is the same as the winter one, with a few optional additions: a red and white checked dress or playsuit, or grey or black knee‑length tailored shorts. As you can see, two of our wonderful Year 1 pupils are already modelling these perfectly.
Here’s hoping the sunshine decides to join us soon.
We are delighted to share the news about our Reception intake for September 2026. While many areas across the country are experiencing a drop in birth rates and a corresponding fall in school applications, Belswains Primary School continues to attract strong interest from families.
This year, we received 168 applications for our Reception places, and 60 children have now been offered a place with us. We are excited to welcome our newest cohort and their families into the Belswains community.
National projections show a very different picture. As highlighted in The Guardian (25 September 2025), “By 2029, the forecasts suggest only 4.24 million primary school pupils will be enrolled, a reduction of 162,000 that would be equivalent to 800 single-form primary schools closing over that period. ” This is a reminder of how fortunate we are to remain a school of choice for so many families.
Thank you for your continued support in making Belswains a vibrant, brilliant place to learn.
Over the past few weeks in EYFS, the children have been actively developing their team-building and problem-solving skills. They have made excellent use of the outdoor area, working together and exploring new challenges. The children are also very excited and are eagerly looking forward to welcoming the chicks and butterflies in the coming weeks.
The children were completing a science experiment, pouring soapy water on the ground and stamping so that the worms thought it was raining!
The children in Nursery explored using a kite and seeing if it was windy enough.
The children worked as a team to fill the bucket, they loved finding mini beasts.
The children enjoyed the new water station, the children worked out where the water would fall.
Year 1 have started a new Art topic about buildings. We walked around the school grounds to find different types of buildings, including The Nest, The Aviary and houses. Then, we sketched some of these buildings. We made sure to include lots of different features, including windows, lights and even door numbers!
Year 4 Get Creative with Photo Editing!
This term in Computing, Year 4 have been exploring the world of photo editing using Canva. The children have learned how to safely download and upload copyright-free images, crop and rotate photographs, adjust colours and, importantly, discuss the ethical considerations of editing images.
They have thoroughly enjoyed enhancing photos using the wide range of tools available, with a particular highlight over the past two weeks being the use of Canva’s AI features to create imaginative new backgrounds.
The results have been impressive- we may well have some future photographers and designers in the making!
Cooking up a Storm!
Year 5 have successfully wrapped up their “Sow, Farm and Grow” topic with a hands-on and delicious finale. As part of their learning, the children designed and made their own soups using a variety of seasonal vegetables. They developed important food preparation skills, including chopping and peeling, while learning about healthy ingredients and where food comes from. The highlight of the project was, of course, taste-testing their creations, with pupils evaluating flavours and celebrating their efforts. It was a fantastic way to bring their topic to life and build confidence in the kitchen.
K'nex Workshop
This week, the children took part in an exciting K’NEX workshop where creativity and teamwork were put to the test. Working in pairs, they were challenged to design and build their own rockets, ensuring each model included removable boosters, a capsule for the astronauts, and reached a minimum height of 20 centimetres.
The room was full of energy as teams collaborated, shared ideas, and problem-solved together to bring their designs to life. Once completed, the rockets were entered into a friendly competition where points were awarded for teamwork, innovative design, and any extra features the children incorporated.
It was fantastic to see such imaginative creations and strong cooperation between partners. Well done to everyone who took part!
On Wednesday 22nd April, the Belswains Ospreys football team proudly represented the school in the league cup final after a fantastic semi-final victory over Galley Hill Primary.
It was a tense and thrilling match against St Thomas More, with excellent football played by both teams. At half time, the score stood at 2–1 to St Thomas More, despite a brilliant goal from Max (Y5H). The Ospreys showed incredible determination and refused to give up. A superb free kick from Logan (Y6F), struck from 20 yards into the top left corner, brought the excitement soaring- and he went on to score again! Despite their tremendous effort, the final whistle blew with a score of 4-3 to the opposition.
We are immensely proud of the Ospreys, who are the first Belswains team in a very long time to reach a final. What an incredible achievement!
A heartfelt thank you goes to all the parents who transport and support our football teams- without you, these opportunities would not be possible. And finally, a special thank you to Mr Makwada, Miss Bradbury and Mr Wheeler for all of their hard work in coaching and travelling with the teams. Belswains are so lucky to have you all!
We are already looking forward to the 2026/27 season in September with our Ospreys, Buzzards and Harriers.
Go Belswains!
A position for a Parent Governor will be available from the start of the next academic year. We’re sharing this information now so you have time to consider whether this is a role you might like to support.
This is a voluntary position, but an incredibly valuable one. Parent Governors play a key part in supporting their child’s school, helping to shape the strategic direction of the school, and working closely with our excellent Governing Board and Senior Leadership Team.
If you think this could be something you’d enjoy or would like to learn more about, please start giving it some thought. Further details about the nomination process will be shared later in the year.
