To express your interest in joining Bellingcat's Volunteer Community, we ask you to complete the following interest form.
Our Volunteer Community's mission is to facilitate peer learning and collaboration between our volunteer members and Bellingcat's staff, including investigators, editors, investigative tech professionals, and more. Let's explore the key research areas and types of collaboration you can expect with us!
Our Volunteer Community is organised into smaller sub-groups, each focusing on key research topics listed below to facilitate effective collaboration between our members and Bellingcat staff. Members will assign themselves to these areas upon joining the community, but they will be able to contribute to projects in any of these areas, regardless of their primary group choice.
👀 Conflict Monitoring - focus on investigating conflict, e.g. incidents, including debunking disinformation, creating datasets and analysis related to conflicts.
✋ Civil Society & Human Rights - civil issues, which are not directly related to conflict, such as investigations into migrant issues, police violence.
🕸️ Online Ideologies - focus on online extremists and fringe ideologies and conspiracy communities. Transnational and local movements.
💰 Financial Investigations - connected to matters of corruption, corporate activities and more.
🌱 Environmental & Wildlife - research in these topics using open source research methods and resources.
💻 Investigative Tech - Open Source Research Tooling and Technologies, e.g. application of artificial intelligence, tools development and more. You can learn more about their work in these public video series.
✍️ Investigative Journalism - reporting and publications on findings discovered using open source research methods.
Here are the most common types of collaboration you will encounter within our community:
Formal Projects or Research Phases: These include an open call for members to join, have clearly defined goals and tasks, and may include additional documentation as needed.
Informal Research: This type of collaboration mostly takes place through non-structured group discussions and exploratory research processes.
Long-term Projects: These projects have a set timeline of a few months or no defined end date and are typically organised as formal projects.
Quicker Turnaround Tasks: These tasks may involve one or more members for specific ad hoc requests to support the ongoing work of one of our researchers or research partners.
Each research area has a dedicated team overseeing it from Bellingcat's side. In addition to investigators, our organisation includes various other departments and skilled team members, such as fundraising, editorial, and technology teams. You can meet more of our team members here.
