The performance tells the story of Cady Heron, who moves to the United States from Kenya. She is quickly outcast from the rest of her peers, but is welcomed by Damian Hubbard and Janis Sarkisan, who help her find her place at North Shore. She meets Regina George, Karen Smith, and Gretchen Weiners, labeled as “The Plastics” who quickly take her under their wing. Cady shows that she has a knack for calculus, but when she meets her first crush, Aaron Samuels, things go awry. Over time, she finds out from Gretchen that Aaron and Regina were together, and that ex-boyfriends are off limits from friends. Regina finds out that Cady has a crush, and she decides to take him back. In vengeance, Cady puts Kalteen bars in Regina’s food with the help of Damian and Janis to make her gain weight. The talent shows rolls around, and The Plastics make their 6th reappearance of “Rockin’ Around the Pole". Cady’s revenge party continues, as she learns a secret from Gretchen about Regina. After that, Regina is kicked out of the friend group due to not following their dress codes, and the remaining girls learn to become fearless.

As a result of this, Cady starts to act just like Regina, taking her place in the Plastic circle. Cady is then crowned as Spring Fling queen, where makes a public speech to apologize to everyone she has hurt at North Shore. There is huge lesson to be learned by all!

On Tuesday, March 5, the National Honor Society hosted a blood drive at Bellaire High School. Students, ages sixteen and up, were given the opportunity to sign up and give toward a well deserving cause. This event was made possible with the help of Vitalant, the sponsoring business, munificent donors, and the volunteers provided by NHS. A large shout out goes to Mr. Nathan Regel, the advisor whom made this whole event viable.

The act of blood donation is completely overlooked; although it is a necessity in the world. While donating blood may not seem large, it is extremely beneficial. It plays a huge impact in the medical field, especially with there being a blood shortage and all sorts of diseases going around. For each one donor, their blood gives opportunity to save up to three lives. The process of donation is quite simple. You must have been of or over the age of sixteen, healthy and not recently fighting illness, and meet the weight requirement of 110 pounds. Along with this, you could not donate with low iron. Once beginning the process, it only takes a short amount of time. From the time you are sat in a chair, to resting and snacking up, it only takes about 10-20 minutes.

This event attracted 26 units of blood, which is enough blood to be distributed to assisting in the lives of 62 men and women. A select amount of donors were also given the option to donate plasma.  On behalf of Bellaire High School, we would like to thank all individuals who donated and assisted in making this event possible, along with run smoothly.

Bellaire’s Sources of Strength is a new group that has been formed in the 2023-2024 school year. Each grade level has a select number of students who make up SOS. This group is a peer-led program designed to build protective influences across the student population using youth leaders from the diverse groups to develop programming and messaging aimed at changing the norms and behaviors, and reducing the risky behaviors of their peers. These leaders are the following: Seniors: Mac Pettigrew, Khalil Kimbro, Janyah Johnson and Majestique Jackson; Juniors: Avery Arno, Sam McCloud, Kaylee Jenkins, Zara Harveth, Brenna Banal and Bradyn Beckett; Sophomores: Graham Campbell, Marli Williams, Aubriel Dodds, Dane D’Aquila and Kaleb Tanner; Freshmen: Addison Weeks, Abby Myers, Dominic Hopkins, Elizabeth Mayer, Alex Padgett and Shane Doty.

The SOS Mission Statement states that they are made up of diverse students and adults from many different corners and cultures of Bellaire High School. Their mission is to spread hope, help, strength and positivity into every corner of our community. The main goal of the members’ is to want their voices to be heard, for they hold great power, which is used to break the silence when someone is struggling, and to connect them to the help they need and deserve. They also wish to spread hope by focusing on stories of strength, rather than trauma.

The Sources of Strength is advised by BHS Spanish teacher, Rebecca DiFabrizio, Student Services coordinator, Dorothy Matusic, and history teacher, Jamie Campbell. These faculty members have already started on their mission to spread positivity throughout the school and community. Currently the members have hosted a Mental Health Awareness Spirit Week, held an assembly to help build confidence, hosted a Turkey Trot for both the school and the community, put together a school 3 on 3 basketball tournament, and has also help volunteer and donate to the Bellaire Methodist Church.

Sophomore leader, Marli Williams, has stated, “Being a member of SOS means a lot to me because it focuses on mental health, and I feel the students attending Bellaire High School need to be lifted up and encouraged to do better things in school.” Williams also said, “SOS is important to be involved in school groups and to engage with other peers, so we can reach every corner of every person in the school; and make Bellaire an overall better place.” Junior leader, Avery Arno, has also stated, “Volunteering at the church fills me with happiness, and I enjoy donating supplies to the people in need.”

National Honor Society Members Inducted at Evening Ceremony

Bellaire’s National Honor Society inducted 27 new members to join the 17 veterans. During the induction, the officers of NHS introduced the program, stated the pillars of leadership, read biographies for new members, and all recited the NHS creed for new members who then repeated the oath. These officers are the following: President Drew White, Vice President Allie Ault, Treasurer Abigail LaRoche, and Secretary Sidney Rowson.

To be inducted into NHS, students had to gain a total of 90 points; these are gained from the four pillars: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. Scholarship is earned from a student’s G.P.A., a minimum of 3.5 is needed to be eligible and climbs one point per number starting at 78 points and totaling 85 points. Service is based what school activities or community work a student has been a part of, and this can total up to 5 points. Leadership is awarded by one point for each elected office office held and/or any honor received in any scheduled competition; as a result, these can tally up to 5 points for a student. Character is rated from the staff of Bellaire High School, and each student will be given a minimum of 1 or a maximum to conclude their final category.

The National Honor Society is advised by BHS science teacher, Mr. Nathan Regel, who has already started on his mission to allow members to become more active in the community and help the students represent the student body. Currently the members of NHS have helped with the tutoring of elementary and middle school students.

Veteran member, Janyah Johnson, has stated, “I think the importance of NHS is showing peers that working hard to accomplish and achieve is worth it in the end. As a veteran, I want to inspire more people to try hard and achieve their personal goals in life.”

Thespians Perform Arsenic & Old Lace at the Bellaire Public Library

The Bellaire High School Thespians performed Arsenic and Old Lace October 13 at the Bellaire Public Library.

The show, set in the 1940’s, tells the comedic tale of two old aunts, Abby and Martha Brewster, as they care for their guests with a pinch of poison. All the old ladies want in their life is for no one to feel lonely or sad. This leads to a spiral of questioned insanity; Mortimer feels as though he’s going mad. This feeling is worsened when his sister and her accomplice show up at the door. Joanna Brewster and her doctor friend, Heidi Einstein, arrive with another dead body. Mortimer is challenged with getting his deranged sister out of the house and trying to contain his aunts’ murderous tendencies. He eventually gets ahold of his brother, Teddy, who believes he’s Teddy Roosevelt, and sends him off to Happy Dale along with his aunts.

The cast of Arsenic and Old Lace consists of leading roles: Hayden Scott as Mortimer Brewster, Kiernan Porter as Abby Brewster, Leahnna Sparling as Martha Brewster, Elizabeth Showalter and Joanna Brewster, Brody McGilton as Teddy Brewster, Ashlyn Shimble as Heidi Einstein, Laiken Hibbitts as Elaine Harper.

Volley for a Cure Game Raises Money

The Bellaire High School volleyball team recently had a fundraiser to help raise money for a member in their community. Itsy Maupin is currently off work because he is fighting pancreatic cancer, so the Big Reds decided to try and help his family financially by hosting a volleyball game called Volley for a Cure to help the Maupin family.

“Why is this cause important?” Michelle Weyrick  said, “We currently have a Big Reds' volleyball player whose Dad is fighting pancreatic cancer. As a team, we need to show our support! We are using Volley for a Cure as our sponsor to help raise money. Mr. Maupin can no longer work due to his treatments, so we are hoping to help with the financial burden. In addition to raising money, we are expecting to have a night of fun for the family.  When you are going through struggles, it is nice to have something to take your mind off of things,” Explained Weyrick.

The goal for this fundraiser was to raise at least $1,000. The entire community came out and supported with a giant student section. The Bellaire Marching Band also contributed by playing "The National Anthem" and the "Bellaire Fight song." People donated baskets for the Chinese auction. Many people bought 50/50 raffle tickets and purchased shirts. Both teams came together at the end of the game and got a picture with Maupin in their matching shirts. The Bellaire team got him a gift as well. Overall, everyone who came out and supported had a great time. The Lady Reds won the game.

“This is devastating, but it really brought light on how much support we have from family, friends, and the community.” Maupin commented. He said the best advice he could give would be to never lose hope. Therefore, Volley for a Cure was a huge success and the family appreciates all of the help they have received.
