Bellaire high school photography class was offered an opportunity of a lifetime at the end of 2018 school year. The Stifel Fine Arts Center presented a chance to participate in The Rural Arts Collaborative (RAC) program for the 2018-19 school year. The program is funded through a grant from The Benedum Foundation. The program originally set to include schools in Pa. This was the first year for an Ohio school to be included in the program. This is considered a "capstone" project, with and end result project of an entire school years work. The program is meant to enrich the art department of the willing school by pairing the art teacher up with a prossional working local artist. BHS was paired with a world known photographer, Rebecca Kiger of Wheeling, WV.
The photography department at Bellaire typically runs on a 35 mm camera, dark room process. Much of the equipment that we have is out dated and on its last leg. Stifel loaned 12 digital cameras for the students to use for the program. Cell phones were even being used to take photos. 16 Photography students took thousands of pictures through out the school year. They participated in class critiques, learned about many famous photographers, and worked with sucessful artists in the photo journalism world. Sometimes we would have guest speakers in the classroom, sometimes we skyped with pulitzer prize winner, Judy Walgreen from California during class. Judy was paid to edit 450 pictures, and was able to narrow them down to the 52 photos published in our magazine, The All American Town.
Apalachia is a hot topic in contemporary photojurnalism world right now. The students were able to explore dark and beautiful areas of interest in their lives, as growing up and living in Rural America, or Apalacha. The magazine showcases a variety of unbiased visual moments and qoutes during their school year.
The "Zine" has been a huge sucess since its launch. Copies have been sold to National Geographic Travel, The New York Post, and the International Center for Photography (ICP). The ICP wants to send students in the fall to present the "Zine" to their library in NYC.
This has been an amazing opportunity for Bellaire High School to experience. The students have learned so many things that wouldn't have been possible without Stifel Fine Arts Center and the RAC. We are forever grateful for having this experience. There are limited copies available for purchase of $10.
