Databases for Research

The library supplies all BELA students and staff with free access to JSTOR, a digital library of academic journals, primary sources and books. For help with navigating JSTOR ask Ms. Lauren for guidance or check out this helpful guide on the JSTOR website. For free, full access register for JSTOR using your BELA email address. 

EBSCO is a research database that includes thousands of academic journals, magazines, newspapers and other sources covering a wide range of topics. The library also supplies students with free access to Academic Search Premier in addition to JSTOR.  For help navigating the resource, as Ms. Lauren or check out this tutorial on some basic searching techniques! This database is available for free with your Brooklyn Public or New York Public library cards! Go here for access. 

This internet library is a collection of millions of digitized books, video clips, magazines, web pages and software applications that have been made free to the public. This database is unique in that anyone can upload materials, so it's definitely not the go to place for known credible information like some of these other databases that contain information that has been reviewed and confirmed to be correct. This database is helpful for finding primary sources or fiction works. Say you want to know what rock journalists were saying about Bob Dylan in the 1980s, this would be the place to look! Or if you wanted to see what Google looked like in 2000!

DPLA is a free database of primary sources collected from libraries, cultural institutions and universities across the country. This is a wonderful resource because in addition to a huge collection of documents, the database makes finding sources easy by creating topic based collections and offers lots of guidance on the often tricky task of citing primary sources!

The Library of Congress has an ever-growing collection of digital materials and primary sources. This is a wonderful resource for things like old periodicals, photographs and news clippings. 

The Brooklyn Public Library also offers free access to an extensive list of digital databases. If the resources above don't serve your needs, try perusing the list linked above. Many of the databases are freely accessible to all, but a few require a library card. If you don't have one, never fear! You can sign up for a digital card quickly and for free here to gain instant access! 

This is a resource of crowd-sourced archive intended to preserve and highlight graphic design history. An awesome resource of old magazine covers, advertisements, interviews and so much more! For anyone interested in art or cultural history.
