Arthur Curry, alias Aquaman, ha messo su famiglia e suo figlio ancora in fasce giΓ dimostra il potere di parlare con i pesci. Purtroppo il suo "lavoro" di re di Atlantide non va altrettanto bene: un consiglio xenofobo e protezionista blocca le sue riforme e impedisce che il popolo subacqueo collabori con il mondo di superficie per fermare il riscaldamento globale. Il quale subisce una drastica accelerazione per mano dell'arcinemico di Aquaman: Black Manta. Questi, guidato dalle visioni di un sinistro tridente nero, ha iniziato a impiegare il leggendario Oricalco, riscaldando tanto i mari quanto le terre emerse.
James Wan ruba a piene mani dal cinema fantastico e scommette sulla simpatia di Jason Momoa, affiancato dal piΓΉ rigido Patrick Wilson secondo la formula dei buddy movie. La coppia funziona ma tutto il resto Γ¨ nel migliore dei casi altalenante.
La computer grafica di Aquaman e il regno perduto, per esempio, offre a volte uno spettacolo efficace, ma in diverse altre occasioni ammannisce immagini di imbarazzante piattezza, indegne di un blockbuster con questa aspirazione. Per limitare l'abuso della CGI James Wan sposta spesso la vicenda - che narrativamente Γ¨ tutta concentrata su questioni dei sette mari - in diversi ambienti non subacquei. Tanto che tre set piece sui quattro del film hanno luogo all'asciutto: in una prigione nel deserto, su un'isola tropicale e infine in una fortezza tra i ghiacci, mentre solo un elaborato assalto ad Atlantide ci riporta al coloratissimo mondo sottomarino e hi-tech del primo capitolo.
Orm affronta nel film un percorso di redenzione così simile a quello di Loki che Arthur stesso non manca di chiamarlo proprio Loki (e gli scappa pure una strizzata d'occhio alla saga di Harry Potter). Ma Wilson non ha il carisma di Hiddleston né un personaggio altrettanto ambiguo, quindi l'accoppiata tra lui e Momoa risulta più convenzionale.
A essere ancora più risaputi sono però gli "omaggi", a partire da quello a Guerre Stellari, da cui viene ripresa di peso la cantina di Mos Eisley con tanto di boss del crimine dalle fattezze alla Jabba the Hutt. Da Il Signore degli Anelli Wan ricalca poi la scena del prologo in cui a Sauron veniva tagliato il dito dell'Anello. C'è spazio persino per la Skull Island di King Kong, con la sua feroce megafauna tropicale, ma almeno questa citazione trova una declinazione più originale: a inseguire i protagonisti non saranno infatti i soliti dinosauri, bensì un inedito sciame di cavallette giganti.
Aquaman e il regno perduto è così un titolo profondamente derivativo, che si lascia alle spalle personaggi centrali dello scorso film, su tutti Mera che ha pochissime battute nonostante sarebbe la compagna di Arthur. In questo caso è evidente che il personaggio è stato drasticamente ridotto di peso dopo le vicende processuali di Amber Heard e Johnny Depp, ma defilando Mera rimane un film praticamente tutto al maschile non molto al passo con i tempi.
