Phonics sounds & skills: Doubling Rule -ed, -ing, -er, -est When we add -ed, -ing, -er, or -est to a word with one vowel and one final consonant, we need to double the final consonant before adding the ending. For example, the word stop has one vowel (o) and one final consonant (p). To turn stop into stopped or stopping we need to double the p then add -ed or -ing. The word big has one vowel (i) and one final consonant (g). To turn big into bigger or biggest we need to add another g before we add -er or -est ending.
Irregular/High Frequency Words: We will focus on our sight words list #7.
Comprehension skill: Main Idea -what a story or article is mostly about. Theme Every story has one “big idea” or “meaning” This is the theme of the story.
Conventions skill: Types of Sentences A declarative sentence (statement) tells about something. It ends with a period. An exclamatory sentence (exclamation) shows strong feelings. It ends with an exclamation mark. An interrogative sentence (question) asks something. It ends with a question mark. An imperative sentence (command) tells someone to do something. It ends with a period.
Math skill: We will tell time to the hour and the half hour, using analog and digital clocks. We will write the time to the hour and half hour. We will understand that 30 minutes is the same as a half hour.
Social Science/Social Studies Skills: In Social Science, we will continue our study of “Light, Sound and Communication” where we will look for sources of light around us. In Social Studies, we will continue with our study of the unit, How Our State Government Works, where we will talk more about the 3 Branches of Government. We will also discuss other leaders in the state government, whose work affects people’s lives.
