The goal of the Bedminster ESL program is to develop students' proficiency in social communication and academic language through thematic units based on the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards for English Language Learners in K through Grade 8. The Bedminster program recognizes that the primary goal of second language learning is the acquisition of the needed language competencies to achieve academically in all content areas. Therefore, ESL is treated not as a subject to be learned, but as a tool for learning other subjects and as a tool for critical thinking.

Students will develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing language proficiencies in the content areas through individual and small group instruction. Specific concept development as well as learning strategies instruction is also provided. Various learning styles are addressed throughout the curriculum.

The Bedminster program recognizes US multiculturalism and the need to preserve and respect each child's language and culture. Toward this end, students are provided with opportunities to share information about their heritage with others and opportunities to build home-to-school partnerships are pursued.
