Lurgio Seismology Project

A partnership with Boston College Educational Seismology Project & Weston Observatory

The Boston College Educational Seismology Project began as a program to operate seismographs in K-12 schools, and based on those classroom seismographs, it continues to provide educational enrichment for students of all ages, using seismology as a medium for a broad-based science education program.

The BC-ESP uses seismology as a medium for inviting students into the world of science research by inquiry-based learning through investigation of earthquakes recorded by seismographs located in K-12 and college classrooms. Seismology is an interdisciplinary science that requires understanding a wide range of scientific concepts, and seismology also teaches students how the natural environment impacts society. Thus, the BC-ESP offers numerous possibilities for introducing students to the nature of scientific inquiry and to the importance of science in their everyday lives.

This innovative partnership with BC-ESP has been made possible by the generous support of the Bedford Education Foundation. Real-time ground motion data will be utilized by students in science classes in order to get an in-depth look at seismic activity around the world. The data gathered from Lurgio Middle School will contribute to worldwide databases and help give researchers a better understanding of seismic activity.
