Ideas for how you can support your child who may be struggling with Reading. These are evidence based practices that you can use at home!

Phonological Awareness Activities

Students who struggle with Reading often need intensive interventions in the area of Phonological Awareness. These are oral/auditory activities. This resource, created by Dr. David Kilpatrick, is designed to provide regular practice for students. This is something we use with students and call "Sound Puzzles." You can use this resource if you'd like to practice with your child or look over it to get an idea of ways you can practice with your child. These are activities you can do in the car, on a walk outside, or just sitting in the living room!

Here is a video explanation to understand how to do this.

Sight Words

For sight words, you can make flashcards for each word your student does not know automatically. However, the more interactive you can practice sight words, the better. Use the word lists below (either Dolch or Fry) to determine which words your child needs to practice then try one of the activities below.

Decoding/Phonics

  • Glass Analysis Website: This website provides word lists to practice most word families. The reading passages are usually difficult, so if you are interested in a passage to read that matches the word family your child is practicing, email Mrs. Tucker for a leveled passage. This link explains how the Glass Analysis approach works.

    • Decoding Guide for Daily Practice: Mrs. Tucker or Ms. Parry can send you a feature to practice each week, as well as a leveled reading passage that matches.

    • In Google Classroom (code: 54exoj5), Mrs. Tucker has added "how to" videos for practicing decoding and fluency each day.

  • Moby Max: Log-in using Clever. The student can work on the following subjects: Phonics & Spelling Rules, Phonic Blending, Phonics Spelling.

  • Multi-Sensory Reading Lessons: Parent Packs following the Sonday System of reading are available to use in Google Classroom, or you can click the link to access them as well. Detailed lessons are provided for Parents to be able to effectively use at home for daily lessons that are each approximately 20-30 minutes long. Let us know if you need help getting started. This is an Orton-Gillingham, research based curriculum.

Fluency

We have created a Google Classroom to easily access new fluency passages each week!

Just click "Join Class" on Google Classroom and enter the code 54exoj5. Check each Monday for your new passage!

Comprehension Practice

In Google Classroom (code: 54exoj5), click on your assigned weekly fluency passage. Vocabulary and comprehension questions will accompany the passage. Use the vocabulary review daily to build understanding and use the comprehension questions at the end of the week to check for understanding.

Other practice ideas include reading a book together then your child can answer questions with you or have them practice reading on Epic, RAZ Kids, Read Theory, or Moby Max.
