Friends! Before school begins, students are already part of a large support system. Band is a big family, and you will learn to depend on one another. Students are brought together through the common experience of music, marching, and performance. As a bonus, eighth grade students begin to build friendships with high schoolers even before they get to LHS.
Exercise! Students burn quite a few calories during marching band, making the Marching Minutemen a great way to stay active throughout the summer and fall. Our activity requires lots of movement, and many of our sections carry large instruments, drums, and flags throughout our performances.
Life Skills! In addition to music, students learn vital skills through marching band that will follow them everywhere they go. Leadership, the value of hard work, goal-setting, time management, responsibility, discipline, team mentality, compassion, and social skills are just some of these life skills learned in the Marching Minutemen that will be applicable to students’ future successes.
Intelligence! Music and marching require use of both sides of the brain. Students are actively engaged in the rehearsal and performance processes. Marching band also promotes time management, a major factor for academic success in high school.
Résumé Builder! Admissions officers, future employers, and military recruiters understand that students with marching band experience are hard workers, problem solvers, skilled at time management, and that they understand the value of commitment. Having the Marching Minutemen on applications for colleges, trade programs, scholarships, and jobs makes you a stronger candidate, will get you more interviews, and help you get noticed!
Pride! Continued success for the Marching Minutemen depends on every student’s contribution, and giving your best results in a product that everyone can ultimately be proud of. We believe that pride is earned, and that you can earn it through the Marching Minutemen.
Many, many other things! Students are exposed to a variety of performance settings and are given the chance to travel to sporting events, parades, and competitions, all through their talents and hard work through music. If you give your attendance, dedication, passion, and enthusiasm, you share that gift with your fellow marchers and with every audience you encounter with the Marching Minutemen.
