Introduction: Congratulations on making it to your final SketchUp project! You have learned how to use many of the basic tools and commands in SketchUp for Schools. Now, it's time to put all of your skills to the test and create a complete, self-contained 3D world.
In this assignment, you will design a house and its surrounding property. You will be responsible for building all the major elements yourself and using the 3D Warehouse to add the final, realistic details.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this project, you will be able to:
Create a complete 3D model with multiple integrated components.
Demonstrate proficiency with core SketchUp tools, including Line, Rectangle, Push/Pull, and Paint Bucket.
Navigate and utilize the 3D Warehouse to import external models into your project.
Apply basic design principles to create a visually appealing and organized scene.
The Assignment: Your mission is to build a complete house model that includes the following elements:
A house structure with walls, a roof, windows, and doors.
A driveway.
A sidewalk leading to the house.
A yard with basic landscaping.
A patio or deck.
Required Elements from the 3D Warehouse: You must use the 3D Warehouse to find and import the following items to populate your scene:
A tree.
A shrub.
A car.
Deck or patio furniture
Instructions (Step-by-Step): Students may work in small groups
Start a New Project: Begin a new project in SketchUp for Schools. Use the Rectangle tool and the Push/Pull tool to create the flat ground for your yard.
Build the House: Use the Line and Rectangle tools to draw the floor plan of your house. Then, use the Push/Pull tool to give the walls height. Add a roof using the same tools. Don't forget to add windows and a door!
Add Site Elements: Use the Rectangle tool to draw the shapes of your driveway, sidewalk, and patio on the ground. Use the Paint Bucket tool to apply different materials and colors to these areas (e.g., concrete for the driveway, bricks for the patio).
Landscaping: This is where you will add your trees and shrubs. Go to the 3D Warehouse by clicking the "components" button on the right side of the screen.
Find and Import: In the 3D Warehouse, use the search bar to find the items you need. Search for "tree," "shrub," and "car." When you find a model you like, click on it and then click the "Import" button to add it to your scene.
Populate Your World: Use the Move and Rotate tools to place the trees, shrubs, and car in your scene. Make sure to arrange them in a way that looks realistic and appealing.
Final Touches: Use the Paint Bucket tool to add materials to your house (siding, roof shingles, etc.) and to your landscaping. You can also use the Tape Measure tool to make sure everything is a realistic size.
Save: Save your project as "Dream Home" and be ready to submit it for grading.
Tips for Success:
Group Everything: Use the Group command to group different parts of your model (e.g., group all the parts of the house together) to keep your project organized.
Check Your Scale: Make sure the car and people you import from the 3D Warehouse are the correct size compared to your house.
Good luck! We can't wait to see what you create.
