Each Sunset IB Diploma Candidate has the opportunity to investigate a topic of special interest through the development of the Extended Essay. This core requirement for the IB Diploma familiarizes students with the kind of independent research and writing skills expected by colleges and universities. The essay may be written on a topic in one of 60 subject areas and allows students the opportunity to explore an area of interest in depth.
For example, selecting a topic in one of their higher level courses allows a student to broaden their knowledge in a highly rigorous academic topic of their interest. They also might add breadth to their academic experience by electing to write in a subject not included in their course of study. While the essay is a student-led project, they are assisted and supported in their efforts by a staff mentor ("Extended Essay Supervisor") who meets regularly with the student.

Current IB Diploma Candidates in the process of working on their Extended Essays have several resources available for support and guidance:
- Extended Essay Canvas Course (all Diploma Candidates are enrolled by Mrs. B -- email her if you need access.)
- Sunset Media Center: Mrs. Cassinelli is Sunset's certified librarian who is IB-trained. She can help Candidates with navigating academic research databases, sources, and provide instruction on conducting research.
- IB Online Extended Essay Guide: It is essential for students to consult the Subject-Specific Guides for their selected topic. There are also exemplars with comments from examiners, and other resources.
A Few Nuts & Bolts for Extended Essays:
All Extended Essays will be digitally uploaded by the Diploma Student and authorized by the IB Coordinator. (Instructions will be provided to students.)
- The candidate's name or number should not appear on any of the pages of the essay including the title page.
- Formatting is in Ariel font, size 12, double-spaced text, all pages numbered
- File type: doc, docx, pdf, rtf.
- File size: not to exceed 10 MB
- All diagrams, maps, and tables must be digitally produced.
