• Open House Presentation

Attendance/Transportation

• Our school day starts at 8:20 am and ends at 2:55 pm.  

• Students may start coming into the classroom at 8:10 am.

• Walkers and car riders should arrive between 8:10 am and 8:15 am.  

• Students that arrive later than 8:20 am to class will need to stop by the office to get a late slip. 

• Please notify the office if your child will be absent. 

• Please notify the office if you will be bringing your child later or picking them up early from school due to an appointment.  

• If your child’s take-home transportation will be different than their usual routine, please send a note describing the changes in transportation for that day.  

• If you need to change their take-home transportation later in the day, please contact the office to let them know the changes. DO NOT EMAIL THE TEACHER OF THESE CHANGES WITHOUT NOTIFYING THE OFFICE.

5th Grade Supplies - To have at school:

1  zippered pencil bag - NO BOXES - place inside:

• • 3 #2 pencils, yellow, sharpened

  • 1  sets Crayola colored pencils, 12 ct., sharpened

  • 1  thick expo markers, colors 

  • 1  large Elmer’s glue sticks (or 1 small)

  • 1 earbud ¾” grip to plug into Chromebook - must fit in the pencil bag.

  • 1  Fiskars scissors, sharp 7”

  • 2  thin highlighters, different colors

1  yellow spiral notebook

3  spiral notebooks, any color

1  yellow plastic folder (PROVIDED AT SCHOOL)

Snacks/Water bottles

• Students should bring a water bottle filled with water. A sock around the water bottle will help with condensation.

• Breakfast is available to students before school.

• Lunch is about at the halfway point in our school day.

• Students will NOT need a snack and should leave these things at home.

• If a student has a medical need for a snack, such as diabetes, please be certain the nurse is aware to monitor sugar levels. Snack will be eaten in clinic at that time.

• Students may use the restroom once during a class period if needed as well as before or after recess.

Birthdays/Parties

• Due to the number and variety of food allergies in the fifth grade, we will not be allowing birthday treats.

• Details about class parties will be shared closer to time.

Classroom Management/Agendas

Our goal is to work as a team to help your child be successful in school! 

• For infractions, the character card in the agenda will be marked by the teacher. Please sign the agenda weekly so that we can stay in communication about your child's behavior.

• Most minor problems will be handled during the day with a mark on the student's Character Card.

• For major problems, we will call or email the parent along with putting the incident in Abre. 

• We will also celebrate outstanding effort with a quarter’s incentive such as a movie and/or treat such as extra recess.

Fidget Rules:

• A student needing a fidget must have a doctor's note saying it is necessary. 

• A fidget that is required must stay in the student’s hands or on the desk. 

• If the fidget is in a student’s hands, it must be under the table and the eyes of the student are to be on the teacher. 

• The student should not use the fidget to get the attention of a neighbor or use the fidget to distract a neighbor. 

• SPINNERS ARE NOT ALLOWED AT PARKWOOD!

Agendas:

• Teachers will post our assignments on an agenda in google classroom each week.

• Students are expected to write this down in their agendas.

• It is strongly advised that parents check their child's agenda each night.

• We are happy to stamp the agendas for accuracy and/or completion of assignments, if requested by a parent.

• If a stamp is requested, it is the responsibility of the student to bring the agenda to their teachers during class. 

• Students will not be permitted to go back to another class to get a stamp.

Progressbook

• Grades are published online and are live for you to view.  They are updated at least every two weeks.

• If you do not know your login information, please contact the office and they will give it to you. 

• We will help students set up their online accounts, so they can also monitor their progress.

• It is essential to the success of your child and for best communication for parents to diligently check grades.

Coursework Policy

• Late work, not due to an absence, may result in a loss of 50% of points. This will be at the teacher's discretion.  Work 2 or more days late may not be accepted.

• If a student is absent, it is the responsibility of the student to ask for any missed materials/papers.

• Absent work is the responsibility of the student to submit as the teacher might not ask for it.

• Students are expected to use any given time at the end of class to work on homework. This will NOT be available daily.

BAOTAP/MISOTAP

BAOTAP (Books Are Our Thing At Parkwood) is a program designed to encourage students to read at school and home.  Each month students are given a reading calendar in which they record the number of minutes they read during that month.  Books that students record on their calendar should be books that are on their reading level. Students will turn in their calendar at the end of the month.  30 min= 1 book. 

• 50 books= backpack keyring and certificate

• 50-1000 books= spirit stick and certificate per every 50 books

• 1000-2000 books= spirit stick and certificate per every 100 books

• 500 books= pin

• 1000 books= name on plaque

• 1500 books= trophy

• 2000 books= GRADUATION! This includes a medal

MISOTAP (Math Is Our Thing At Parkwood)  Students are rewarded for mastering math facts by completing 12 levels.  The number and type of basic facts vary with the levels, but 3 minutes is given for all levels.  If you would like your child to practice at home, please have him/her ask for a few sheets to practice.  

Conferences

• Fall Parent/Teacher Conference sign-ups will be sent at a later date.

• Every attempt will be made for all three teachers to attend each conference.

• Parents of students earning As and Bs, with no concerns from teachers, will likely not receive invitation unless the parent requests one.

• If at any time throughout the school year you feel the need for a conference, please contact us via email and we will set up a conference. We are available from 3:10pm-3:25pm. 

5th Grade Programs/Awards

STARBASE Program: 

An exciting opportunity for fifth grade is attending STARBASE!  The STARBASE program is a five day, science- and math-based program through the Wright Patterson Air Force Base.  The program allows students to learn many science and math concepts directly linked to the fifth-grade curriculum through hands-on, discovery-designed activities.  The program will take place at Parkwood Elementary.   

D.A.R.E. Program: 

Officer Peffly will be joining our team for approximately two weeks later in the year.  She will be conducting the classes using lessons in the D.A.R.E. workbook. These lessons focus on how to make good decisions, knowing what a good decision is, how to avoid getting in a “sticky” situation, and what to do if friends are not the best influence.  This curriculum changed several years ago, so it may be different than what an older family member or friend has experienced.

Second Step SEL Program:

This is a district-wide social emotional learning program in which students are educated on how to handle social situations and their emotions so that they can be successful in school and in life.

Presidential Academic Awards:

Students that score in the 85th percentile on the MAP test in either reading or math and maintain an A average in 4th grade as well as for all of the 1st semester in ELA and math in 5th grade will be recognized at the year-end assembly. 

Students that score in the 85th percentile on the MAP test in either reading or math and maintain only 1 B for ELA and math in 4th grade and for the 1st semester in 5th grade will be recognized as well at the year-end assembly.

Testing

MAP- Students will be assessed three times a year (fall, winter, and spring) in reading and math. This assessment is used to monitor students’ progress in these areas throughout the year. The test results from all three administrations will be used in placement recommendations for middle school.

State Testing- Fifth grade will be tested in the areas of reading, math, and science.  The testing will be computer-based and will be given in March-May. More information on the state testing will be given throughout the school year. We will notify parents if there is a change to this testing.
