Please return library books by May 20th, 2021. If returning after, please drop them at the Main Office.
Did you know that children who do not read over the summer months will have a decrease in reading skills when they return to school? Richard Allington, faculty member at University of Tennessee in Knoxville, helped complete a three-year study about it and states, “What we know is that children who do not read in the summer lose two to three months of reading proficiency.” Over time this loss can add up to years.
Beaufort Academy believes children should be reading every day. And they should have access to lots of reading materials of their choosing! One of the best ways to do this is to incorporate reading time in your family daily. You can also support your child’s reading habit by supplying them with lots of books to read. Here are a few ways to mix it up:

Make weekly visits to your public library a part of your summer routine.
The Summer Reading Program at the Beaufort County Library begins June 19th, 2021.
Can’t get to your library on a regular basis? Use your library card to access their wonderful resources. Hoopla is terrific and each card holder can download 6 items (more during the pandemic) a month. There are audiobooks, e-books, comic books, and read-alongs just right for your child.
Another great resource for digital books is Tumblebooks, available through SCDiscus.org - SC’s Virtual Library. Tumblebooks has great children’s video and audiobooks, read-alongs, ebooks, and graphic novels. You can get a username or password at your local library or email Claire Bennett or Gina Reilly at Beaufort Academy.
Lower school students at BA are familiar with Epic!, an online ebook library that is chock full of wonderful books including 'Read-to-Me" titles and chapter books. Families are encouraged to start an at home subscription to this wonderful resource if they haven't already. We have sent invites to LS students this pass spring. Let Claire Bennett or Gina Reilly know if you need assistance in getting your account at home.
Hope your summer is filled with lots of great memories and many wonderful books!
