A time of change was upon us, with protests happening in the streets, and waves of outcry spread throughout the world. As a new future looms in front of us, an unsure future, we must look to what we believe in, and what we believe is right to guide our future actions. Unfortunately in this year a world-wide pandemic hits, decimating the lives of thousands, and forever the changing the lives of countless more. We should take this as a sign that we can pull through great challenges and difficulties, as long as we look out for each other.
Below you will find multiple different examples of what I accomplished over my Sophomore year in high school and what I learned from each experience.

Communicate Ideas: Selects and applies appropriate resources, such as technology and media, to communicate and collaborate with a range of diverse individuals.
The whole purpose for this club was to learn more about how the legislative branch works through first hand experience. Although I was with a group of two other people, we all worked on creating a bill that we could bring into the Ohio senate or house of representatives at the Statehouse in Columbus. Throughout this process, a lot of communication was required with different parties, especially since my bill was about a controversial issue on the subject of gambling. This ties into my ISSN goal because this whole event was all about researching and communicating ideas. From actually finding the information to trying to broadcast our vision to the other students at the council, communication was the main focus of the event. Although the conference ended up being virtual, I was able to try to get my bill passed on the house floor.
In previous years, this program was all in person during the conference. However, due to health concerns, it was cancelled and moved to an online zoom call. Before this conference happened, we had to design a bill (a potential law that goes into congress to be passed or denied) and bring it to the youth conference to run a mock session of the Ohio legislature. We would first start with smaller legislative bodies called committees, and then try to get our bill passed there first. At the same time, we would also be voting on other people’s bills to see whether or not they should be passed into the house/senate. Once the bill got passed, if it did at all, then it would be brought to the large house/senate floor to be voted on again by a larger audience. The bill that my group and I had created was called the “Bill to warn youth of gambling in electronic games”, which was all about trying to reduce the purchase of loot boxes in video games, which are often tied to a luck component. These varied loot boxes use luck to draw the large number of youth that play their games, especially in games like Apex Legends and Overwatch where skins, although optional, seem essential to the experience.
This was the first event that truly started my interest in politics, a continuing passion that is now influencing my decisions on my future profession. Youth & Government greatly improved my understanding of the legislative process and improved my ability to communicate my ideas on a subject. I now know that in order to argue with my peers on a subject, I need to have a significant amount of backing for my side.

Take Action: Acts individually or collaboratively to execute a plan that is culturally appropriate, and likely to lead to improvement of a local, regional, or global situation; assesses the merit of the action.
World Language as a whole is tied to a global community, especially since many people in the United States do not speak the same language. Due to this, taking part in the learning of a new language is essential to becoming a more well-versed global citizen. Being proficient in the native language of someone that you are communicating with can greatly benefit your relationships as a whole, or ease the ability to accomplish the task that you set out to accomplish. In Jackson, there are many opportunities to expand your knowledge and use it to take action in the community, especially with events such as the one I will be describing.
La Sociedad honoraria hispánica holds lessons for elementary students every year, and I was able to participate in this event for the first time during my sophomore year. In this, you would be assigned to different teaching groups in order to be able to teach the young children how to begin to speak Spanish. They learned everything from the alphabet to colors, and many had fun while doing it! This relates to my ISSN goal of taking action because this whole event was meant to give low cost Spanish lessons to support the Spanish language and to hopefully interest the students in being more culturally aware. All of the teachers and organizers were volunteers, and we all went there to spread our knowledge of the Spanish language to the younger generations.
This event broadened my view into the importance and impact of teaching people at a young age of a world language. This allows children to be more aware of other cultures that exist outside of their own, and it sparked my interest in teaching new culture. Yes, I do not want to be a teacher in the future, but this allowed me to see other people’s perspectives and ideas, especially young children’s.

Investigate the World: Selects and uses multiple international and domestic sources to identify relevant evidence that addresses a global question.
AP US History is all about Investigating the world, and more specifically the effect that the US had on the globe and how the country changed over time. Although this class was mainly focused on the United States, a lot of it could be tied into other world events that were happening at the same time. Such an assignment that did so was the creation of a map for the US Market Revolution. This project required us to create a map, and then fill it in with various different images and drawings of what was going on at the time. We needed to use multiple sources to find out the information that we needed, and this included our textbook along with multiple sources on the internet. This allowed us to be able to know where to find geographical information quickly and how to read maps, and through this hands-on experience we were able to understand the scales and meanings of objects on different maps, for we everyone did something different. This matches the ISSN Domain of Investigate the world because although it was mainly focused on the US, the research that was involved to find some of this information introduced me to other world events at the time, and it was essential to truly understand what we were creating.
This artifact taught me how to research with efficiency and to use all of the resources at my disposal. For example, the internet isn’t always the fastest way to find information due to the fact that our textbooks were readily available and contained a lot of useful information. This was one of the more interesting assignments of the year, and it helped teach me how to understand more global information and to take in all sides before deciding on my beliefs for a subject. Through the comprehension of all world events that influenced the events of the United States, I will be able to more effectively analyze future world events and decipher their true meaning.

Mole Day
1st Semester 2019

Recognize Perspectives: Expresses a clear personal perspective on a situation, event, issue, or phenomenon, identifying an influence on that perspective.
October 23rd. The day to end all days: Mole day. This was the coveted event that was propagated by almost every High School Chemistry department, a day to not be reckoned with. This event was essentially where every student makes some sort of project, be it a stuffed mole, shirt, ceiling tile, work of art, everyone needed to create something that fit the theme. This theme happened to be from the hit movie Despicable Me: the Minion. I personally created a long-sleeve shirt with a minion on the front, in an attempt to imitate the classic scene of an alien bursting out of the chest. This all revolved around the number 6.022 x 10^23, or the mol. This was a learning moment as well as a creative assignment that allowed anyone to have their own perspective on the prompt.
This relates to my ISSN goal Recognize Perspectives due to the fact that everyone could have their own take on the topic. Due to this, I was able to see and recognize other people’s opinions and processes on creating their mole. Every single person’s project was different, and it allowed me to realize that if you have many people on the same subject, then you will be able to get more perspective on the issue.
This taught me that advice from multiple different people can lead to a better understanding of an issue at hand, and that having multiple viewpoints can create more solutions for some of our world’s greatest problems. Yes, this was only a school project about a Chemistry equation, but it taught me a lot about how to interpret and recognize the many perspectives of our community.

GO Night
First Semester 2019
Mrs. Arter, Mrs. Arganza, and Mrs. Muckley.
Investigate the World: Analyzes and integrates evidence from sources to develop a well-supported response to a global question.
GO Night, the pinnacle of the first semester in JAGS (The Jackson Academy for Global Studies). This is what my group and I had been working on for almost a half of a school year. This project was all about finding global perspectives. More specifically it was centered around what we can do to make people aware of the many issues of the globe, as well as making ourselves more aware of specific issues that we can try to mitigate or help solve. For my group and I, we specifically researched and presented about world hunger, especially about the after-effects of malnutrition in third-world countries. This definitely falls into the ISSN goal of Investigate the world because this project was a deep dive into the issue of food insecurity. This involved a lot of research ranging from using wikipedia and non-profit organizations’ websites to talking to actual leaders of certain non-profit organizations themselves in interviews.
Not only did the topic of Hunger get tied in with the 2nd SDG (Sustainable Development Goal), but a lot of knowledge was gained about the struggles of poverty in very poor countries and the issues that it poses for the global community. We investigated the world and communicated through a presentation on the subject.
Although irksome at times, this task greatly improved my realization of the many global challenges that are very far from being addressed and resolved. Through all of the presentations that I watched at this event, I was able to come to a more sound opinion about my future career and my future actions. This was a very enlightening experience that allowed me to really understand what was going on in other countries outside of the United States of America, and to see that everything is not just plums and roses. This was a very essential project in my JAGS experience, and it is a grand shame that it wasn the same for the current sophomores of 2020-2021.
