I chose JAGS because I really enjoy learning about politics and history, especially world history. I also enjoy engaging with my community and helping make the world a better place.
The Four Pillars of JAGS
Investigate the World: Poses a researchable question on a local, regional, and/or global level, and explains its significance to the global community.
I learned about Cambodia and the wildlife there, a country I was very unfamiliar with. I learned about the environment there and different endangered species, and what they're doing to combat the global issue of global warming.
Recognize perspectives: Explains the perspectives of other people, groups, or individuals as distinct from one’s own perspective.
When I visited the Heifer Global Village, I learned about different Third World countries. I got to experience what it would be like to live as a person in those countries, and it was quite eye-opening.
Communicate Ideas: Selects and applies appropriate resources, such as technology and media, to communicate and collaborate with a range of diverse individuals.
I communicated the various topics and themes displayed during Homer's Odyssey in the form of a play. This was the appropriate resource as Homer's Odyssey has been interpreted into a play many times.
Take Action: Identifies opportunities for personal or collaborative action to address a situation, event, issue, or phenomenon in a way that is likely to improve conditions.
Going into Freshman year, I had to plan for how I would get my PE credits. I hadn't played a sport in years and really didn't want to take gym again. So, I took action and tried out for the bowling team. I inevitably made the team and really enjoyed my time. I made many great friends who have lasted through high school.
Investigate the World: Analyzes and integrates evidence from sources to develop a well-supported response to a global question.
Sophomore year, I attended the JAGS trip to Costa Rica. This was a wonderful experience, as I'd never left the country before, and I was able to fully answer the question of "What does Pura Vida mean to you?"
Recognize perspectives: Explains the perspectives of other people, groups, or individuals as distinct from one’s own perspective.
Sophomore year, I decided to join stage crew, something I'd been wanting to do for years. The arts program was somewhat unknown to me at Jackson, and it was very interesting to see a new side of the school, as well as meet new people and hear their perspectives on things.
Communicate Ideas: Selects and applies appropriate resources, such as technology and media, to communicate and collaborate with a range of diverse individuals.
I took AP US History Sophomore year, and utilizing my essay writing abilities, I was able to communicate many ideas surrounding the United States of America. Such ideas include the impact of the civil rights movement, how the industrial revolution affected the US, and my thoughts on the book The Whiskey Rebels by David Liss.
Take Action: Acts individually or collaboratively to execute a plan that is culturally appropriate and likely to lead to improvement of a local, regional, or global situation; assesses the merit of the action.
For our Sophomore Documentary Project, my group and I decided to focus on school shootings and how global rates are affected by the different gun laws in other countries.
Investigate the World: Poses a researchable question on a local, regional, and/or global scale and explains its significance to the global community.
For English 11, I was tasked with writing a multi-page research essay on a topic of my choice relating to technology. For this, I chose to research hypersonic missiles and their impact on the world. This was a fun essay, and I really enjoyed learning about other countries' militaries.
Recognize perspectives: Expresses a clear personal perspective on a situation, event, issue, or phenomenon, identifying an influence on that perspective.
In Spanish IV, a partner and I were tasked with researching and hosting a class discussion about a controversial topic of our choice. We chose to discuss the existence of aliens, and we heard many great opinions on the topic.
Communicate Ideas: Selects and applies appropriate resources, such as technology and media, to communicate and collaborate with a range of diverse individuals.
For English 11, I was tasked with reading a novel of my choice (I chose The Midnight Library) and making 3 projects to express what I learned. Out of the three projects, the one that stood out as my personal favorite was my Google Earth presentation, in which I took the viewer on a tour of the Earth in chronological order based on the book.
Take Action: Identifies opportunities for personal or collaborative action to address a situation, event, issue, or phenomenon in a way that is likely to improve conditions.
In Model UN, I drafted and attempted to pass a resolution that would transition the world away from using airports and instead encourage them to use train systems. This would benefit the world as airplanes are a major polluter.
Investigate the World: Analyzes and integrates evidence from sources to develop a well-supported response to a global question.
In CCP Science, Energy, and Environment, I was given the task of creating a poster to inform people of an issue the world was facing. Most people chose to write about pollution or endangered species, but I chose to write about the decrease in snow over the past 10+ years. This was a fun essay, and it was really interesting to read about the different weather trends across the world.
Recognize Perspectives: Expresses a clear personal perspective on a situation, event, issue, or phenomenon, identifying an influence on that perspective.
In CCP Composition I, we wrote many essays throughout the semester to prepare for our final essay, a research essay based on any coming-of-age topic we wanted. I chose to write mine about the loss of creativity as people grow up, and it was really interesting. I especially enjoyed talking to people and hearing their opinions on losing creativity and why it occurs.
Communicate Ideas: Selects and applies appropriate resources, such as technology and media, to communicate and collaborate with a range of diverse individuals.
For CCP U.S. Government and Politics, there is a final paper at the end of the year that you're required to write. This paper involves researching the branches of government and their roles, developing a bill of your own, and explaining the steps on how it could become a law. I chose to write a bill making home economics classes mandatory, and it was very interesting to see how the branches worked with each other.
Take Action: Acts individually or collaboratively to execute a plan that is culturally appropriate and likely to lead to improvement of a local, regional, or global situation; assesses the merit of the action.
In September of 2025, renowned activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated. Having wanted to establish a chapter of Turning Point USA at my school for a while, that was the moment when I decided we needed it more than ever. So, with the help of my classmates, I established Jackson High School's first chapter of Club America.
