I got the opportunity to go to a completely different high school to study Legal Studies. Within Legal Studies, I participated in Mock Trial and Moot Court. I loved working with legal advisors and professors of law who now have become close contacts that I have. I learned how to write legal documents and conduct formal interviews. But what I enjoyed most was getting field experience in my junior and senior years working with paralegals, lawyers, and police officers.
JSA has always been my passion program. I always wanted to be a lawyer for as long as I can remember but I felt I didn't explore my love for theatre enough. I started JSA strictly for theatre and dance. When I was injured I thought my JSA career was over but the students and staff encouraged me so that I could build up my confidence on stage. I found new ways to continue my activism through the arts. JSA was always my home and I wanted the incoming students to feel that way as well. I joined the leadership team and worked closely with Ms. Gardner in every stage of high school. JSA brought me back out of my shell and molded me into the creative I am today.
I joined JAGS in eighth grade. When I first started I was warned that my schedule would be too busy but I knew I could do both. When I started JAGS I only had one class for JAGS all four years of high school. I really wanted to explore my culture and history as a black woman in America through JAGS. I created a documentary about police brutality and that's what started my journey through my capstone. JAGS gave me the opportunity to learn more about my culture and others.
I had the opportunity to attend Buckeye Girls State in the summer of my junior year. Buckey Girls State is an organization that allows high school girls (juniors) to learn more about government and politics through an interactive program. There were roughly 600 girls across the state of Ohio in attendance. The task was to create our own functioning state government. I was inspired by my unit advisor to run for governor. At first, nobody really believed in me because I was timid by nature, but because I was so passionate about leadership, I knew I could be the governor. I ran on a platform of education reform and was elected as the governor.
