Our musical selection this year is the very funny and entertaining musical adaptation of The Addams Family. It premiered in Chicago in 2009 and moved to Broadway the next year, where it was nominated for two Tony awards. It won several awards, and featured Nathan Lane and Brooke Shields on stage in the early days of the Broadway production.
The story follows Wednesday Addams, who has fallen in love with a boy (Lucas Beinecke) and wants to bring him home to meet her family. The Addams Family loves the macabre and lives in a haunted house where it looks like every day is Halloween. Lucas comes from a straight-laced Midwest farm family, seemingly very “normal” from the outside looking in, so there is a lot of anxiety and curiosity from both sides as the two families contemplate the possible union of their children. When the Beinecke family joins the Addams family at their house for dinner, lots of secrets are revealed, and lots of questions about love and what it means to be normal or to be yourself are asked and answered. It’s a very entertaining show that addresses some big questions along the way!
Please remember that when it comes to a musical theater production, there is no such thing as a small part. Some roles may have more lines, but when it comes to the final product, every stage and backstage role is absolutely vital. I hope that you will be excited to participate; the process of preparing and performing is fun, creative, and a great opportunity for students from a wide range of grade levels to work together.
