Art 1: This is an introductory course which will encourage students to evaluate and reflect on the impact of art on society as well as provide students with the fundamental skills in drawing, painting, and mixed media work. This class will focus on basic art vocabulary, skills, and media, emphasizing the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Students are encouraged to experiment, reflect, take risks, make mistakes, and practice. Participation in group critiques and discussions are part of this course.
Art 2: This course builds on skills gained in Art 1 and is primarily focused on two-dimensional works. Art History is explored in greater depth, and new materials and processes are introduced such as printmaking and watercolor. The semester culminates with a series of figure studies workshops. Emphasis is placed on the conceptual component of students’ work as they become more effective visual storytellers. Students continue to participate in critiques and maintain a sketchbook of ideas, exercises, and planning sketches. Some sketchbook assignments will be completed outside of class, and will factor into students’ grades. Creative problem-solving, collaboration, and self-expression are greatly emphasized.
Art 3: Art 3 is a year-long advanced level course focusing primarily on two-dimensional works, but may include 3D projects based on student interest. Successful completion of Art 1 AND Art 2 is a prerequisite of this course, as the skills obtained in those classes directly contribute to success in this advanced course. Emphasis is on conceptual development of works and critical thinking as students solve visual problems. High levels of craft, care, and planning are expected as are participation in regular critiques and discussions. A variety of media will be used, and opportunities for self-designed learning emerge in the latter part of the year. Art 3 is recommended as a precursor to enrollment in AP Studio Arts; many works created in Art 3 are appropriate for inclusion in an AP portfolio, or in applying for college art/design programs.
AP Studio Arts: This is an advanced-level course intended for students who are serious about their artistic practice, including those who intend to apply to art or design schools after high school graduation. Students may submit either Drawing or 2D Design portfolios. The AP exam for Studio Arts consists of a portfolio of work submitted online, and a selection of work which is physically mailed to the College Board. Art 3 is a recommended, though not required, precursor to this course. There are additional fees associated with submitting a portfolio; interested students should talk with Mrs. McLelland about these fees and other expectations such as workload outside of class, caliber of artwork expected, and other considerations. Additional information, including portfolio contents, can be found by visiting the College Board's website.
