Hello Dolphins! My name is Mrs. Banester and this is my lucky 13th year as the Visual Arts teacher here at Southport Elementary!
Art has always been an important part of my life and something that I share with my family and friends. I studied art throughout high school - with opportunities in ceramics, photography, drawing, stained glass, jewelry making and more. I continued my art studies at the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC where I double majored in Studio Art (with a focus on photography, painting and sculpture) and Corporate Communication, and minored in Art History.
I love art so much that I went back to school at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, SC (close to Myrtle Beach) where I received my Masters Degree to teach art (certified K-12). I moved here to North Carolina in 2011 and I finally feel like I have found my home! My husband and I were married out on Oak Island in 2015 and brought our son into the world in April of 2019.
Mrs. Banester - the artist!
I love to teach, but I also love to make my own art outside of school! When I can find free time I really enjoy painting, drawing, and building things with my hands! I like to work small because it gives me a chance to be creative every day in shorter periods of time.

In the art room we are learning about more than just art; we are building leaderships skills, learning to communicate effectively, thinking creatively and problem solving using what I like to call the "Creative Process" (a modification of design thinking and scientific method where students EXPLORE, IMAGINE, CREATE, and EVALUATE - starting a cycle of creative investigation).
As an art teacher, and practicing artist...
I believe that every student/child is an artist - I aim to teach students to act and think like artists and to treat the art room like their own studio space.
I believe students should explore a variety of materials, artists, styles, and real world applications of artmaking to see what sparks their curiosity or interest.
I believe that students learn best by doing and I encourage experimentation and freedom to play/tinker.
I believe that there is no "right way" to make art. Our projects/lessons offer students varying degrees of voice and choice in the art making process, depending on what standard(s) we are focused on or goals we are trying to achieve.
I believe that when students learn to think like artists, they begin to show confidence in their ability to express themselves visually and verbally, and are better able reflect on their artmaking and the work of their peers.
I believe that practice makes progress, not perfection.
And, I believe that mistakes are an opportunity to learn and use problem solving skills.
I find that my beliefs are closely aligned to the beliefs and principles of TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior), though we are not a fully TAB classroom. I am currently researching how/whether to incorporate TAB more fully into the art room, to facilitate more learner-directed projects.
Ultimately, I strive to create a space where all students feel comfortable expressing themselves without fear or judgement and feel comfortable trying new things. I want to share my joy for art and help my students gain an appreciation for the arts and what they contribute to our world!

When students are meeting the expectations of the art room, their class has the opportunity to earn stars.
3 Stars = 1 Paint Spot for their class Palette
Check out Earning Palette Spots to find out more!!
Whole Class Rewards
Each time students come to art, their class has the opportunity to earn stars (1/2 star at a time).
Stars are earned by maintaining or exceeding the expectations in the art room.
Once a 1/2 star is earned, it cannot be taken away.
When a class earns three whole stars - they receive a color spot for their class palette, and the stars start over at zero.
The amount of stars a class can earn each art day is limited only by non-artistic behaviors.
When a class fills their palette (with 8 color spots), they earn a free choice in art!
**I will keep an ongoing count of stars for each class. If a class leaves art with remaining stars (less than 3), they will start with remaining stars on the board when they return.
What happens if...
