SBMS Health & PE
Nix & Mikkelson
Nix & Mikkelson
Welcome to Health and PE! During this course students will be able to assess their own health and understand the relationship of healthful living to their quality of life, understand ways to prevent major health risks, appreciate concepts of fitness and wellness, and accept responsibility for their personal health.
All students will be required to change into appropriate shoes to
participate during class daily.
Grades: Student grades come from 50% PE and 50% health – both are equally important!
***Students that do not have shoes to participate in PE will receive a zero for the day.
You cannot pass one section of this class without passing the other.
Participation and coming prepared to engage are keys to success!
Health 50%: Health Daily Work 30%
Health Assessments 20%
PE 50%: Daily participation 40%
Cardio Fitness 10%
Activities: cooperative games, tag games, soccer, hockey, volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, flag football, dance, zumba, yoga, kickboxing, handball, four square, ultimate games, disc golf, kickball and more!
Cardio fitness: a test of cardiovascular health. Students will run 1 mile and graded on a fitness scale.

Important Information:
Students will alternate PE for one week and then Health for one week.
All students will be required to have shoes for PE.
All assignments missed are the STUDENTS’ responsibility to make up.
Missed cardio assessment days must be made up or will receive a zero.
Bring a lock to PE if you wish to keep your valuables stored safely.
Illness & Injury:
We understand that illnesses and injuries may occur. Our goal for this class is to meet every student at their own fitness level. Physical activity is necessary for receiving a desired grade in this class. If a student is injured, sick or recovering from an illness we will not expect full exertion, but as long as students communicate their needs we are able to adjust our expectations for their activity level. With the prevalence of common illnesses and injuries we would rather adjust our expectations than have several students who just do not participate at all.
Parent Notes:
We encourage students to communicate their needs to us to promote independence.
A parent note is accepted if a student will only miss 1 day of class. If more than 1 day will be missed we will need a doctor’s note excusing them.
We really need your support to ensure that students participate as much as possible. If your child is just not feeling well please trust us to accommodate and avoid sending a NO PE note.
We are more than willing to accommodate and work with our students.
Doctors Notes:
If a student is going to miss more than 1 day a doctor’s note is required.
Please have the student bring their PE teacher the note and a note to the homeroom teacher.
Please be sure the doctors note includes:
the date the student can return to normal participation
activities that the student can and cannot perform
for example: if a student has a sprained ankle, running or jumping would not be appropriate but participating in stretching and stationary dribbling could be attempted
